CBS Cancels ‘S.W.A.T.’ (Again) After 8 Seasons

by Dave Elliott

After being saved twice before, it seems like S.W.A.T. may finally have hit the end of the road, as it’s announced CBS has cancelled the procedural drama for a third time.

Inspired by the television series and the feature film, S.W.A.T.’ starred Shemar Moore as a former Marine and locally born and raised S.W.A.T. sergeant, tasked to run a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles. Torn between loyalty to where he was raised and allegiance to his brothers in blue, Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson strives to bridge the divide between his two worlds.

‘S.W.A.T.’ has escaped the cancellation axe twice before. The first time was back in May 2023 which only lasted a few days before CBS reversed the decision and renewed it for what it said would be a 7th and final season. Then in April 2024 CBS again u-turned and decided to order an 8th Season. This time, however, CBS are not playing. There were apparently no renewal talks with Sony Pictures Television who made the drama, so no opportunity for them to try and negotiate something. CBS just decided to end the drama.

This is the third major drama cancellation this year for CBS, following its decision to axe both ‘FBI: Most Wanted’ and ‘FBI: International’. The issue with all three of these shows is that they come from outside studios, so are more expensive for CBS to air. Last year, Sony managed to renegotiate and restructure some of the financials to make ‘SWAT‘ work for CBS. This year that isn’t happening. The other problem is that ‘S.W.A.T.’ is the lowest-rated drama on CBS. It also is 8 Seasons in with a large ensemble cast, which adds to the expense. Unfortunately, it does seem like this is the end of the road for Hondo and his team.

Shemar Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Rochelle Aytes and Anna Enger Ritch star. Shawn Ryan, Andrew Dettmann, Justin Lin, Neal H. Moritz, Marney Hochman, Pavun Shetty, Billy Gierhart, Shemar Moore and James Scura serve as executive producers. S.W.A.T. is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with CBS Studios.

S.W.A.T.‘ Season 8 does not yet have a UK premiere date but will air on Sky Max at some point this year. If you want to keep track of these or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get UK premiere dates.
