Channel 4 has confirmed it will air ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ 6th & final season this May on the UK broadcaster, co-premiering the title with Prime Video UK.
Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. June Osborne, aka “Offred”, (Elisabeth Moss), one of the few fertile women known as Handmaids in the oppressive Republic of Gilead, struggles to survive as a reproductive surrogate for a powerful Commander and his resentful wife.
In the final season, June’s unyielding spirit and determination pull her back into the fight to take down Gilead. Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) join the resistance. Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) tries to reform Gilead while Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) reckon with what they have wrought, and Nick (Max Minghella) faces challenging tests of character. This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.
Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Channel 4 shared the premiere of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ with Prime Video in the UK for season five, giving you a choice of where to watch it. The same thing will happen with Season 6.
Whilst ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is coming to an end, the story is set to continue after US streaming service Hulu announced earlier this month that it has officially ordered ‘The Testaments‘, a sequel to the hugely popular drama, based on Margaret Atwood’s follow-up novel. That coming-of-age story follows a new generation of young women in Gilead, grappling with the bleak future that awaits them.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is produced by MGM Television. Series six is executive-produced by Bruce Miller (series creator), Warren Littlefield, Eric Tuchman (co-showrunner), Yahlin Chang (co-showrunner), Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Kim Todd, Daniel Wilson and Fran Sears.
