After months of talk, Hulu has officially ordered ‘The Testaments‘, a sequel to the hugely popular drama ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, which returns soon for its final season.
Based on Margaret Atwood’s follow-up novel of the same name, ‘The Testaments’ is a coming-of-age story that follows a new generation of young women in Gilead, grappling with the bleak future that awaits them. For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world before their indoctrination into this life. Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve.
The lead cast for the drama includes Chase Infiniti (Presumed Innocent) as Agnes, Lucy Halliday (Blue Jean) as Daisy, Rowan Blanchard (Snowpiercer, Girl Meets World) as Shunammite, and Mattea Conforti (NOS4A2, The Calling, Power) as Becka, with Ann Dowd reprising her Handmaid’s Tale role of Aunt Lydia.
In addition to releasing they have ordered the drama, Hulu have also announced some more casting today which includes Mabel Li (New Gold Mountain, The Tailings) as Aunt Vidala, a stern disciplinarian and the heir-apparent to the women’s sphere of Gilead; Amy Seimetz (The Killing, Sweet Tooth) as Paula, whose recent marriage to a high-ranking Commander has raised her social status. But her perfect life is complicated by her new step-daughter; Brad Alexander (YOU) as Garth, a young Commander, who becomes involved in the personal lives of the girls he’s sworn to protect; Zarrin Darnell-Martin (Ginny & Georgia) as Aunt Gabbana, a firm proponent of Gilead values and right-hand to Aunt Vidala. She is a strict and uncompromising educator; Eva Foote as Aunt Estee, the youngest Aunt, whose energy and kindness earn her “cool Aunt” status amongst her students; Isolde Ardies (Wayward, Ruby and the Well) as Hulda, a guileless girl, full of excitement at the prospect of womanhood. Her frank observations and optimism have earned her loyal friends; Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba, a competitive classmate from a respected family who is relentless in her pursuit of a high-status marriage; Birva Pandya as Miriam, a girl on the cusp of womanhood who struggles under the pressure of marriage season; And Kira Guloien as Rosa, a caring and dedicated Martha, a maternal figure to Agnes and a much-needed source of love in an otherwise cold household.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss is on board as an exec producer, although it is not clear if she will appear on the show. However, the character of June Osbourne does have a connection to Agnes and Daisy, so it seems possible they may work something out.
‘The Testaments’ is created by ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s Bruce Miller, who serves as showrunner, and executive produces alongside Warren Littlefield, Moss, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, and Mike Barker, who will directs the first three episodes. Priscilla Poriand will serve as co-executive producer. The series is produced by MGM Television.
‘The Testaments‘ does not currently have a named UK broadcaster, although it does come from MGM Television, so it seems possible it will either air on MGM+ or Prime Video in the UK, but we’ll have to see! It will air on Hulu in the USA.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ Season 6 does not yet have a UK premiere date but will air on Channel 4. The final season is due to premiere Tuesday, April 08, 2025, on Hulu in the USA, so hopefully it won’t be far behind here.
If you want to keep track of these or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
