‘Butterfly’: Daniel Dae Kim Leads Spy Thriller Based On Comic, Premiering This August On Prime Video

by Dave Elliott

Butterfly, the new spy thriller series starring and executive produced by Daniel Dae Kim (Avatar: The Last Airbender), is set to land on Prime Video this August.

Based on the graphic novel series by Arash Amel, originally published by Boom! Studios, the six-part series will arrive all at once, making it the perfect summer binge. Developed by Kim’s production company, 3AD, under their first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios, the show blends American and Korean storytelling into a high-stakes espionage drama.

The story centres on David Jung (Kim), a brilliant but unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea. When the fallout from a devastating choice in his past returns to haunt him, David finds himself targeted by Rebecca, a sociopathic young assassin played by Reina Hardesty (StartUp, The Flash), and the ominous spy organisation known as Caddis.

Butterfly is the realisation of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply,” said Kim. “I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, Boom! Studios, 3AD, Amazon, and everyone else who helped bring it to life.”

Joining the cast are Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo (Squid Game), Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell (Top Gun: Maverick), Sean Dulake, and Nayoon Kim, with guest appearances from Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa.

The series is created by Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist, Gotham) and novelist Steph Cha, who both serve as executive producers alongside Kim and John Cheng for 3AD, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for Boom! Studios, and Arash Amel for The Amel Company. Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) directs the first two episodes.

Butterfly’ Season 1 premieres Wednesday, 13th August 2025 on Prime Video.
