Prime Video has used its San Diego Comic-Con panel to unveil the first official teaser for ‘Carrie’, Mike Flanagan’s new eight-part adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel, alongside confirmation that all eight episodes will arrive this October.
This marks the first television adaptation of King’s classic coming-of-age horror story, with Flanagan reimagining the tale for the social media age. The teaser offers a chilling first look at the new series, while also hinting that this version will dig deeper into the characters, pressures and choices which lead towards that infamous prom night.
At the centre of ‘Carrie’ is Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager who has spent most of her life hidden away at home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. Following the sudden death of her father, Carrie is pushed into the unforgiving world of public high school, where a viral bullying scandal and the casual cruelty of social media collide with the awakening of her mysterious telekinetic powers.
The eight-part series will expand the story beyond previous screen adaptations, exploring whether Carrie is becoming a hero, a monster, or something far more complicated. Flanagan is certainly no stranger to finding the humanity inside horror, following his work on Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, so King’s tragic tale feels like a particularly strong match for his talents.
Alongside Howell, the cast includes Samantha Sloyan (The Pitt) as Margaret White, Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton (Fire Country) as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette (My Life with the Walter Boys) as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah (The Buccaneers) as Tina, Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) as Billy, Thalia Dudek (The Running Man) as Emaline, Amber Midthunder (Prey) as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard (Man of Tomorrow) as Principal Grayle.
Flanagan writes and executive produces ‘Carrie’, as well as directing four of the eight episodes. Stephen King also serves as an executive producer, with the series produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
King’s original novel was published in 1974 and launched a career which has seen his books sell more than 350 million copies worldwide. Brian De Palma’s acclaimed 1976 film adaptation helped cement the story as a horror landmark, and the arrival of this new series coincides with the movie’s 50th anniversary.
The Comic-Con panel also revealed new key art featuring a nod to the infamous prom, suggesting that while Flanagan is bringing a fresh perspective to the material, some of the story’s most recognisable moments will still be waiting in the wings. Just remember to be very careful around any suspiciously placed buckets.
