James Gunn Says His ‘Favourite’ DCU Project Is a New TV Show… But It Hasn’t Been Announced Yet

by Dave Elliott

James Gunn’s “favourite thing” in the new DC Universe isn’t Superman, Peacemaker, or even Lanterns. It’s something entirely new… and still completely under wraps.

In a wide-ranging Q&A with EW.com, Gunn offered some juicy updates on the first wave of TV projects within the newly rebooted DCU. He confirmed that, “I’m about to wrap Peacemaker [Season 2]… We’re going to see early episodes of that soon,” and added that the long-awaited Lanterns series, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, is halfway through filming.

But then Gunn dropped a tantalising tease:

“There’s another TV show that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon. It’s just my favorite thing.”

And no, it hasn’t been announced yet.

“When I pitched to [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO] David Zaslav what the DCU would be… we did not announce [this project] in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company.”

So… What Could It Be?

Given Gunn’s track record, fans are already speculating wildly, and with good reason. The fact that he kept the title secret because it could be “ripped off” suggests it’s either a unique tonal blend, a concept-heavy idea, or something pulling from deeper, lesser-known corners of the DC mythos.

It’s also worth remembering that Gunn is a long-time fan of the weird, the heartfelt, and the outsider. He gravitates toward misfit heroes (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad), obscure oddities (Creature Commandos), and morally complex protagonists (Peacemaker).

With that in mind, and, again… this is wild speculation on our part… here are a few DC properties that might just fit the bill:

  • Dial H for Hero – A surreal and often funny concept where a mysterious dial transforms the user into a different superhero every time. It’s imaginative, bizarre, and a perfect fit for Gunn’s humour.
  • Deadman – A ghostly former acrobat who helps the living while seeking his own justice. This could lean into supernatural drama and character introspection, something Gunn has handled well in the past.
  • The Forever People – A group of young New Gods from Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, full of cosmic philosophy and bold visuals. It would be a fascinating expansion of the DCU’s larger mythology.
  • Ambush Bug – A completely absurd, fourth-wall-breaking antihero who comments on the state of comics and superheroes. It’s the kind of thing Gunn might champion precisely because no one else would dare.
  • Animal Man – A deeply human superhero who connects with the life force of animals, often framed through metaphysical and emotional stories. Morrison’s take on the character might make it a natural contender.

There’s also the chance it’s something brand new, either a reinvention of a forgotten character or an original creation inside the DCU framework that ties into the larger arc Gunn and Peter Safran are building.

Setting the Stage

While Creature Commandos technically kicked off the new DCU earlier this year, Gunn made it clear that the real story foundation begins with Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman.

“I wouldn’t say Creature Commandos is important, but Peacemaker and Superman are both pretty important in terms of getting to the bigger story,” he explained.

Whether his secret TV project plays directly into that “bigger story” or not remains to be seen. But if it truly is his “favourite thing,” expect something bold, emotionally rich, slightly unhinged, and unlike anything else in superhero television.

Peacemaker‘ Season 2 premieres Friday, 22 August 2025, on Sky Max in the UK, and Thursday, August 21st, 2025, on HBO Max in the USA. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
