‘Mix Tape‘, a brand new romantic drama set across decades and continents, is coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC Two this July, delivering a heartfelt story of love, longing, and second chances, all wrapped up in a nostalgic late-80s soundtrack.
Starring Teresa Palmer (The Last Anniversary, A Discovery of Witches), Jim Sturgess (One Day, Across the Universe), Florence Hunt (Bridgerton), and newcomer Rory Walton-Smith, ‘Mix Tape’ unfolds over four episodes and follows the emotionally charged journey of Alison and Daniel. From their teenage romance in 1989 Sheffield to their unexpected reconnection in the present day — now living on opposite sides of the world — the series explores the timeless question: If you could have a second chance with the one who got away, would you take it?
Told across two timelines and locations, Sheffield and modern-day Sydney, the story shifts between the youthful highs of first love and the grown-up reality of choices made, with a carefully curated late-eighties playlist driving the emotional tempo. A single track from the past reawakens something powerful in Alison and Daniel, prompting them to reconsider the road not taken… even if it risks disrupting the lives they’ve built.
Adapted by Jo Spain from Jane Sanderson’s critically acclaimed novel and directed by Lucy Gaffy, ‘Mix Tape’ blends romance, music, and nostalgia into a tender drama that asks whether it’s ever too late to find your true rhythm.
The series features an ensemble of UK, Irish, and international talent, including Mark O’Halloran (The Virtues), Helen Behan (Malpractice), Conor Sánchez (Hope Street), Jonathan Harden (Time), Siobhan O’Kelly (The Tourist), Alexis Rodney (The Gentlemen), and Sara Soulié (The Man Who Died). The Australian cast includes Ben Lawson (Designated Survivor), Julia Savage (The Clearing), Jacqueline McKenzie (Savage River), and Chika Ikogwe (Heartbreak High).
Filmed in Dublin and Sydney, the series recently picked up the SXSW 2025 TV Spotlight Audience Award, and was produced by Subotica and Aquarius Films as an official co-production, with support from multiple international screen bodies. It was acquired by the BBC from Boat Rocker.
‘Mix Tape‘ will be available in full on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, and begins airing weekly on BBC Two from 9pm that night.
