We love this show, and clearly, we’re not alone. Apple TV+ has officially renewed the acclaimed, darkly funny, sci-fi thriller ‘Murderbot‘ for a second season, just ahead of this week’s highly anticipated season one finale.
Starring and executive produced by Alexander Skarsgård (Big Little Lies, The Northman) and created by Oscar-nominated duo Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy, American Pie), ‘Murderbot’ has quickly become one of the breakout hits of 2025. Blending sharp comedy with compelling science fiction, the series is based on the bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novellas by Martha Wells.
“We’re so grateful for the response that ‘Murderbot’ has received, and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’ world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team,” said creators Chris and Paul Weitz.
Apple’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss, added, “Chris, Paul, Alexander, and the entire ‘Murderbot’ team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere.”
Critics have hailed the series as “the best new comedy of 2025” and praised Skarsgård for his “absolutely killer” performance as the self-aware, sarcastic SecUnit known as Murderbot. Since its premiere, it has earned a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and won over fans with its unique blend of emotion, action, and killer one-liners.
The finale, premiering Friday, 11th July on Apple TV+, sees tensions spike as Murderbot’s fate hangs in the balance. At the Corporation Rim, PresAux makes a radical request that could change everything.
Alongside Skarsgård, the ensemble cast features Noma Dumezweni (Presumed Innocent), David Dastmalchian (Oppenheimer), Sabrina Wu (Joy Ride), Akshay Khanna (Critical Incident), Tattiawna Jones (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Tamara Podemski (Outer Range).
Season one was written, directed, and executive produced by the Weitz brothers through their Depth of Field banner, with Andrew Miano, David S. Goyer, and Keith Levine also executive producing. Author Martha Wells serves as consulting producer.
‘Murderbot‘ Season 2 is coming to Apple TV+, and we cannot wait to see what’s next for our favourite sarcastic security unit and its obsession with space soap opera Sanctuary Moon.
