‘S.W.A.T.‘ returns to Sky UK for its 8th and final season this July, with Shemar Moore once again leading the charge as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, before the character heads into a brand-new spin-off series.
In this concluding chapter, Hondo and the elite tactical unit face both personal and professional trials. The season includes a gripping case involving the disappearance of students and a school bus driver with a direct connection to Hondo’s past. Among the new arrivals is Devin Gamble (played by Annie Ilonzeh (Chicago Fire, Arrow)), a skilled officer with a turbulent family background that threatens to cloud her future on the team.
‘S.W.A.T.’ is inspired by the 1975 television series and 2003 film of the same name. The series stars Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) as LAPD Sergeant Hondo, a born-and-raised Angeleno who works to bridge the gap between his community and law enforcement while navigating the challenges of leadership and fatherhood. Backing Hondo are his 20-Squad teammates: Jay Harrington (Better Off Ted) as Deacon, David Lim (Quantico) as Tan, Anna Enger Ritch (The Passage) as Powell, Niko Pepaj (The Haves and the Have Nots) as Alfaro, and Annie Ilonzeh as Gamble. Overseeing Metro S.W.A.T. is Patrick St. Esprit (Sons of Anarchy) as Commander Hicks.
The season is executive produced by Ryan, Dettmann, Justin Lin, Neal H. Moritz, Marney Hochman, Pavun Shetty, Billy Gierhart, Shemar Moore, and James Scura.
What’s next: The ‘S.W.A.T.’ Spin-Off
As the main series concludes, fans won’t have long to wait before seeing Hondo back in action in ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles‘. In the upcoming ten-episode spin-off, Hondo is pulled out of forced retirement following a disastrous mission, tasked with leading an experimental SWAT unit composed of unpredictable, untested young recruits. With his legacy on the line, Hondo must bridge generational divides, shape a squad of outsiders into an effective team, and fight to preserve the very program that shaped him.
Filming begins this summer in Los Angeles, with Jason Ning (Lucifer, The Expanse) on board as showrunner. Much of the production team from the original show will return, with Moore, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty (Original Film), and James Scura all executive producing.
It has not yet been announced whether Sky will pick up ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles‘. Interestingly, it does not yet have a broadcaster in the USA either, and is being produced by Sony independently, and will then be shopped to broadcasters and streamers.
