The BBC has unveiled the first trailer for ‘King & Conqueror’, an eight-part historical epic coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC One this August.
The 60-second teaser introduces viewers to Harold, Earl of Wessex (James Norton, Happy Valley) and William, Duke of Normandy (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones), two powerful figures whose paths will collide in the battle for England’s crown. They are joined by their wives, Edith Swan-neck (Emily Beecham, 1899) and Matilda (Clémence Poésy, The Tunnel), as well as a host of allies and adversaries including King Edward (Eddie Marsan, Ray Donovan), Lady Emma (Juliet Stevenson, Truly, Madly, Deeply), Morcar (Elander Moore), Gytha (Clare Holman, Lewis), Tostig (Luther Ford, The Crown), Queen Gunhild (Bo Bragason) and Godwin (Geoff Bell, Top Boy).
The supporting cast features Jean-Marc Barr as King Henry, Elliott Cowan as Sweyn, Bjarne Henriksen as Earl Siward, Oliver Masucci as Baldwin, Indy Lewis as Margaret, Jason Forbes as Thane Thomas, Ingvar Sigurdsson as Fitzosbern, Ines Asserson as Judith, Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson as Hardrada and Léo Legrand as Odo.
Created and written by Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes), with the opening episode directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest), the series explores a clash that shaped the future of England and Europe for a thousand years. Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men with no initial designs on the English throne, but circumstance and personal ambition set them on a collision course that would end at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
Produced by The Development Partnership, Rabbit Track Pictures, Shepherd Content, RVK Studios and CBS Studios in association with the BBC, the series is executive produced by Michael Robert Johnson, James Norton, Kitty Kaletsky, Baltasar Kormákur, Magnus Sigurdsson, Robert Taylor, Dave Clarke, Richard Halliwell, Lindsay Martin, Ed Clarke and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, secured the drama for UK broadcast, with Paramount Global Content Distribution handling international sales.
‘King & Conqueror’ premieres August 2025 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
