A new gameplay trailer has landed for ‘Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown’, the upcoming “story-driven survival strategy game” that lets you take command of the USS Voyager on its perilous journey through the Delta Quadrant. First revealed last month, the latest footage from the Tokyo Game Show gives us a proper look at how the game works, what players can expect, and most importantly for long-time Trekkies, confirms you will be able to decide the fate of Tuvix.
Gameplay pillars: explore, build, fight, choose
According to publisher Daedalic and developer gameXcite, the game’s structure revolves around four main gameplay pillars: exploration, building, combat and choice.
Exploration happens on the galactic map, where you pilot Voyager across systems in search of resources, allies and potential trouble. Building takes place inside a deck-by-deck cross-section of the ship, where you will be repairing damaged systems, constructing new quarters for stranded crew, and upgrading vital areas like The Doctor’s sickbay or the mess hall to keep morale and survival chances high.
Combat naturally rears its head when diplomacy fails, with the trailer showing off Voyager’s encounters against Kazon raiders, Hirogen hunters, and even a looming Borg Cube. And then there are the choices, the kind of “what if?” scenarios that make this such a juicy Star Trek project.
Rewrite Voyager history
The most eyebrow-raising example from the trailer is the infamous Tuvix dilemma. Do you let the hybrid transporter accident survivor live, sacrificing Tuvok and Neelix, or do you undo the fusion, killing Tuvix in the process? It is a decision that has divided fans for decades, and now you get to make the call yourself.
Other glimpses show that Seska’s treachery might not go unpunished, or perhaps you can even pardon her. The USS Dauntless and its duplicitous captain Arturis make an appearance, and you might be able to recruit him to Voyager’s crew. The doomed USS Equinox also features, teasing the chance to save it and bring its crew home alongside Janeway’s. In short, the game does not just let you relive canon events, it invites you to re-imagine them.
Deep ship management
Beyond the headline moral quandaries, the game promises a hefty management layer. Voyager begins its Delta Quadrant journey heavily damaged, forcing you to restore critical systems, rebuild life support and decide which facilities take priority. Do you focus on research to unlock experimental Borg technology at the risk of corruption, or play it safe with Federation standards? Each decision affects not only the ship’s condition but also the wellbeing and morale of the crew.
Crew selection also plays a major role. Away missions require you to assemble the right mix of skills to handle whatever challenges await. A scientific approach might keep casualties low, but sometimes you will want to send in the security team phasers-first. Success or failure can shape not only that mission but the wider survival chances of Voyager.
A roguelike journey through the Delta Quadrant
‘Across the Unknown’ also incorporates roguelike elements, meaning no two journeys are identical. Different runs can see iconic characters survive or perish early, unexpected crises emerge, and whole story arcs play out in new ways. Fancy trying to sneak back to the Alpha Quadrant by using the Caretaker’s Array instead of blowing it up in the pilot episode? The trailer hints that you will have that option, even if it makes for a hilariously short playthrough.
That flexibility is the hook. You get to write your own Voyager canon, shaping the fate of the crew and starship across multiple attempts.
Trailer and release plans
The new trailer teases all of this with a mix of ship cross-sections, away mission dialogue trees, space battles and cameos from the Borg Queen, Seska and more. It is an enticing glimpse at how much narrative freedom and strategic depth Daedalic and gameXcite are aiming for.
There is no confirmed release date yet, but the game is planned for Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. You can already wishlist it on Steam, where the official blurb promises “the fate of the iconic starship is in your hands.”
‘Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown’ does not yet have a release date but will launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
