Channel 4 has released the first images of Brenda Blethyn (Vera, Pride and Prejudice) and Jessica Reynolds (House of Guinness, Kneecap) as Emma Harte in the brand-new adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s bestselling novel ‘A Woman of Substance‘, set to arrive on the channel next year.
Originally adapted 40 years ago as an Emmy-nominated miniseries, the book was not only a massive ratings hit for Channel 4 but also a global phenomenon. Now, four decades later, Emma Harte’s tale of ambition, resilience, and revenge is back, reimagined for a new audience while staying true to its rags-to-riches roots.
The drama charts Emma’s dizzying rise from an impoverished maid in Yorkshire in 1911 to one of the world’s wealthiest women, commanding her empire from a New York penthouse. Along the way, she transforms from servant to mogul, daughter to mother, and lover to fighter, embodying a 20th-century feminist icon who refused to know her “place.” It’s a sweeping story of ambition, determination, and glass ceilings shattered by sheer willpower.
Produced by The Forge Entertainment (National Treasure, The Buccaneers, Marriage), an eight-part series has been penned by Katherine Jakeways alongside co-writer Roanne Bardsley. John Hardwick directs the opening block, with Samantha Harries and Richard Senior taking over for later episodes. Filming took place in Yorkshire, giving the story a fitting backdrop, and Banijay Rights will distribute the series internationally.
‘A Woman of Substance’ was commissioned by Channel 4’s Rebecca Holdsworth and Gwawr Lloyd, with executive producers including Beth Willis, Joe Innes, George Faber, Katherine Jakeways, and The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust.
The series promises a rich mix of period drama and modern relevance, with Emma Harte’s unapologetic climb to the top feeling just as potent today as it did when the novel first took the world by storm.
‘A Woman of Substance’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Channel 4 in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
