Sky has released the official teaser and confirmed the UK premiere date for ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, HBO’s next ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel, arriving this January exclusively on Sky and streaming service NOW.
The teaser offers our first glimpse at a very different side of Westeros — one with “a lot of chainmail, a lot of rain, a lotta mud, and a lotta jousting,” according to creator George R. R. Martin, who appeared at New York Comic-Con to discuss the series. As Martin put it, “I always love medieval tournaments in other pictures. We had several tournaments in Game of Thrones, they were in the background, but not the center. I wanted to do something set during a tournament. I sent [the TV writers] a challenge: Let’s do the best jousting sequences that were ever done on film. My favourite was 1952’s Ivanhoe.”
Set a century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’, the six-episode drama follows the wandering knight Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk (Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters)), and his diminutive squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes)) as they journey through Westeros during a time when the Targaryen dynasty still rules — though their dragons are long gone. The pair encounter danger, destiny, and more mud than most knights’ armour can handle.
Showrunner Ira Parker said that realism and grit were key to the production: “Our guiding light on this show was to follow Dunk in terms of tone and point of view and the mud and the dirt. We wanted the audience to feel what he feels. We kept flooding this field with mud and dirt and… the pain, the agony, the irritation, the closeness. As soon as you put on a mask, it changes the way you breathe. We’re going to feel every grit of that.”
Filmed in Northern Ireland, the show’s tournament sequences were shot on a vast set built at Glenaran, with Claffey joking that “there were more wasps than people.” Between takes, he and young co-star Ansell bonded over games of Super Mario Kart.
The series also stars Daniel Ings (Sex Education), Bertie Carvel (The Crown), Danny Webb (Alien 3), Sam Spruell (Fargo), and Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), with George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker serving as co-creators and executive producers alongside Sarah Bradshaw, Owen Harris, Ryan Condal, and Vince Gerardis. Owen Harris and Sarah Adina Smith direct.
Martin described the series as “much shorter” and “with a much different tone” than ‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘House of the Dragon’. “It’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe,” he added.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ premieres Monday, 19th January 2026, on Sky and streaming service NOW in the UK. In the US, it premieres Sunday, 18th January 2026 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available on Max.
