The BBC and Stan have unveiled first-look images for ‘Lord of the Flies’, a new four-part adaptation of William Golding’s haunting novel, written and directed by BAFTA-winning duo Jack Thorne (Adolescence, His Dark Materials, Help, Enola Holmes) and Marc Munden (The Mark of Cain, National Treasure, Help). The series is produced by Eleven (Ten Pound Poms, Sex Education) for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, in co-production with Stan, who will air the drama in Australia.
Filmed on location in Malaysia, the images reveal a strikingly raw and immersive take on Golding’s vision. The young cast, many of whom make their professional debuts, include Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy and Ike Talbut as Simon. They are joined by Thomas Connor as Roger, Noah and Cassius Flemming as twins Sam and Eric, Cornelius Brandreth as Maurice and Tom Page-Turner as Bill, supported by a large ensemble of boys portraying the island’s “biguns” and “littluns”.
For anyone who first encountered Lord of the Flies in the classroom, this adaptation promises a visceral reminder of the story’s enduring power. Following a plane crash that leaves a group of schoolboys stranded on a tropical island without adults, the series captures their fragile attempt to maintain civility under impossible circumstances. Ralph’s hope for order, Piggy’s logic, and Jack’s hunger for dominance all collide as innocence erodes and survival gives way to something darker.
This marks the first television adaptation of Lord of the Flies, and Thorne’s version remains faithful to Golding’s 1950s setting while deepening its emotional core. Each episode takes its title from one of the key boys: Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack. This structure offers a shifting perspective on leadership, fear and the thin line between civilisation and savagery.
Commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, the series is produced by Callum Devrell-Cameron (Sex Education, Hanna) and executive produced by Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell for Eleven, Jack Thorne for One Shoe Films, Marc Munden, Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC, and Cailah Scobie for Stan. Sony Pictures Television handles international distribution, with the full support of William Golding’s family.
