‘Midsomer Murders’ Season 24 finally sets its UK premiere date as ITV unwraps two brand new mysteries

UK viewers can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as Midsomer Murders is officially returning this Christmas with a long-awaited Season 24 on ITV and ITVX. After more than a year of scattered episodes, shifting schedules, and fans joking they were ready to commit a murder of their own, Barnaby and Winter are back with fresh mysteries that embrace everything people love about the long-running drama: atmospheric danger, eccentric suspects, and enough small-village secrets to make even Midsomer’s hedgerows nervous.

Season 24 launches with ‘The Devil’s Work’, a chilling inheritance-driven tale that sees Barnaby and Winter pulled into a case where century-old family land becomes the catalyst for modern-day treachery. The episode features guest stars Alex Macqueen (Peep Show), Peter Serafinowicz (The Tick), Ginny Holder (Death in Paradise), and Verity Marshall (The Sandman).

The following night, the mystery deepens with ‘Book of the Dead’, as an author linked to a nationwide treasure hunt turns up dead. Barnaby and Winter must decode cryptic clues and outsmart a fiercely competitive group of seekers. Guest stars include Shaun Dooley (Broadchurch), Rhashan Stone (Finding Alice), Omid Djalili (His Dark Materials), Jon Culshaw (Dead Ringers), Oliver Dimsdale (The Crown), Selina Cadell (Doc Martin), and Sally Lindsay (Coronation Street).

It has been a strange run-up to this moment. Season 23 aired sporadically between April and November 2024, leaving viewers confused and concerned that the series had quietly ended. ITV insisted at the time that the episodes were always intended to roll out slowly because each story stands alone, but the gaps were long enough to spark social-media despair from fans who feared Barnaby’s last body had indeed dropped.

Adding fuel to the fire, Acorn TV in the US recently began airing Season 25, with American viewers getting episodes way ahead of the UK due to an exclusive rights deal with distributor All3Media International. The announcement left British fans less than amused, as ITV’s social replies were filled with frustrated pleas to at least air Season 24!

Thankfully, the wait is now over. Additionally, back in October, ITV announced that Season 26 had been ordered and is set to film in 2026.

After a fragmented year and a great deal of fan frustration, Season 24 is finally landing on home soil, bringing viewers back to the scenic countryside murder capital of the world at the most festive time of year.

Midsomer Murders’ Season 24 premieres Monday, 29th December 2025 at 8:30pm on ITV, with Episode 2 airing the following night at the same time.
