Sky Witness has locked in the UK premiere for ‘Matlock‘ Season 2, arriving this January with more courtroom sharpness, more firm-wide chaos, and Kathy Bates proving once again that age and experience make for a formidable combination in a legal drama.
The series sees Kathy Bates (Misery, American Horror Story) return as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, the brilliant attorney who rejoins the workforce at a top law firm while quietly pursuing an agenda of her own. As the second season opens, Matty finds herself questioning the paternity of a man claiming to be Alfie’s father. Meanwhile, partner Olympia tries to shield ex-husband Julian from fallout connected to the ongoing Wellbrexa case, which continues to shake the foundations of the firm.
Behind the polished wood panels and the pointed objections, Season 2 has had its own turbulence off-screen… Actor David Del Rio (The Baker and the Beauty) exited the series earlier in the year following an internal investigation by CBS Studios into alleged misconduct. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman later confirmed Del Rio’s final appearance occurred in Episode 7, with his character, Billy Martinez, written out off-camera in the episodes that follow. Production continued as planned, with the season split into two parts.
Snyder Urman has also teased fresh energy for the back half of the season. New recurring cast members include Sarah Wright Olsen (Parks and Recreation, American Made) as Gwen, an efficiency expert shaking up the firm, and newcomer Henry Haber as Hunter, a younger associate whose bro-ish style throws an unexpected wrench into Matty and Olympia’s already strained dynamics.
While the merger storyline continues to push characters into tricky territory, fans can expect the Wellbrexa arc to reach its conclusion by the end of the season. Snyder Urman has also promised more screen time for favourites, including Justina Machado (One Day at a Time), James Lesure, and possibly another familiar face from her Jane the Virgin universe.
Season 2 launched in the US with more than 13 million viewers across platforms, placing it among the top broadcast series of the year. Bates and co-star Skye P. Marshall picked up Critics Choice nominations, and Bates added a Golden Globe nomination to her collection for her work on the series.
