ITV Sets UK Premiere for ‘Grantchester’ Season 10 as Geordie and Alphy Return for New Mysteries

by Dave Elliott

ITV is heading back to the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester this January, as the long-running crime drama returns for its tenth season. Following the departure of Reverend Will Davenport (played by Tom Brittney), the new run continues to build on the partnership between DI Geordie Keating, portrayed by Robson Green (Wire in the Blood), and newcomer Reverend Alphy Kottaram, played by Rishi Nair (Hollyoaks). The pair settle into their growing friendship and working dynamic as they tackle a fresh set of mysteries across eight new episodes.

Alongside the leads, fans will see the return of familiar faces including Al Weaver (Press) as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones (Only Fools and Horses) as Mrs C, Kacey Ainsworth (EastEnders) as Cathy Keating, Oliver Dimsdale (Hotel Babylon) as Daniel Marlowe, Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman, Bradley Hall (Britannia) as DC Larry Peters, and Melissa Johns (Coronation Street) as Miss Scott.

The series once again comes from creator Daisy Coulam and is produced by Kudos, part of Banijay UK, in co-production with MASTERPIECE. Executive producers include Emma Kingsman-Lloyd for Kudos and Susanne Simpson for MASTERPIECE, with Banijay Rights handling global distribution. As ever, the drama remains based on The Grantchester Mysteries novels by James Runcie.

One more season to come

Back in July, ITV and PBS confirmed that Season 11 will be the final chapter for the beloved drama. Robson Green and Rishi Nair are both set to return, with the concluding season expected to air in the UK in January 2027. After a decade of crimes, confessions and clergy, the village is preparing for its last bow.

Why the UK airs Grantchester later than the US

If you are wondering why UK audiences are only just getting Season 10, it comes down to one of those quirky quirks of modern co-productions. It might seem unusual for a British series to premiere in the United States first, yet Grantchester has made a habit of it. Seasons 8 and 9 reached PBS Masterpiece months before ITV. Season 10 continued that trend, debuting in June 2025 in the US.

There are a few reasons behind the split.

First, Masterpiece is not simply an international buyer. They are a funding partner in the show, which means they get to choose when it airs in America. Second, the two broadcasters use the series to plug very different programming gaps. PBS has cultivated a popular Summer of Mystery lineup, using shows like Grantchester to attract viewers and drive donations during quieter months. ITV, however, saves its premium dramas for the winter season when audiences are indoors and advertising revenue peaks.

Grantchester‘ Season 10 premieres Wednesday, 7th January 2026 at 9pm on ITV in the UK.
