Apple TV Renews ‘Down Cemetery Road’ for Season 2 as Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson Return

by Dave Elliott

Down Cemetery Road is officially heading back to Apple TV, with the streamer announcing a season two renewal for the acclaimed thriller following the first season finale.

The detective drama stars Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) as Zoë Boehm and Ruth Wilson (Luther) as Sarah Trafford, with Thompson also serving as an executive producer. Adapted from Mick Herron’s novel of the same name from his “Zoë Boehm” book series, the show has quickly built a reputation as one of Apple TV’s standout crime dramas.

Since its global debut, ‘Down Cemetery Road’ has been widely praised by critics, earning a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being described as “riveting, dark and wildly entertaining”, with particular acclaim for the chemistry between Thompson and Wilson. The full first season is currently streaming on Apple TV.

Emma Thompson celebrated the renewal in a statement, saying:
“I’m so thrilled that Down Cemetery Road has been enjoyed enough to warrant a second season. The thought of working with the team again, with wonderful Morwenna Banks in the writer’s seat and the indomitable Ruth Wilson who is the best and most brilliant co-star any aging Dame could desire, is frankly far more than I feel I deserve. Zoë Boehm is a punkishly delicious avatar and I can’t wait to pull on her knockoff Doc Martens again. Thanks to everyone who watched! We are go for the next one and it’s all down to you,”

Apple TV’s creative director for Europe, Jay Hunt, added:
“Audiences around the world fell in love with ‘Down Cemetery Road’ and I am glad the unlikely duo of Zoë and Sarah will be back with their unique form of acerbic wit,”

Season two will once again follow Zoë Boehm and Sarah Trafford as they’re drawn into another dark and dangerous case. After a woman falls in front of a train, Zoë is brought in to investigate, but what initially appears to be a straightforward mystery soon spirals into something far more sinister. The pair find themselves navigating the glamorous but ruthless world of black market antiquities, before crossing paths with a brutal serial killer determined to keep his secrets buried.

The series is produced by 60Forty Films and written by Morwenna Banks (Funny Woman), who also executive produces alongside Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta and Tom Nash for 60Forty Films, Emma Thompson, and author Mick Herron. Börkur Sigþórssen (Insomnia) will serve as lead director for the second season.

‘Down Cemetery Road’ marks the second collaboration between Herron and Apple TV, following the hugely successful spy drama ‘Slow Horses’, which was recently renewed for a seventh season and stars Sir Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour).

Down Cemetery Road’ does not yet have a premiere date for Season 2, but will air on Apple TV in the UK and worldwide. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
