Netflix has already saddled up for more frontier drama, renewing ‘Little House On The Prairie‘ for Season 2 before the new adaptation of the beloved books has even premiered.
Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic series of novels about a family growing up in the American frontier during the 1800s, the new version of the story reimagines the Ingalls family journey as both an intimate family drama and a sweeping survival tale set against the backdrop of the American West.
The early renewal suggests Netflix has a lot of confidence in the series, which aims to blend the hopeful, family-focused storytelling of the original books with a modern perspective on life on the frontier. The show also lands at a time when the streamer is leaning heavily into comforting, character-driven dramas, alongside series such as ‘Virgin River’ and ‘Sweet Magnolias’.
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine thanked the cast and crew as news of the renewal was revealed.
“I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive. We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”
Netflix’s Head of US and Canada Scripted Series, Jinny Howe, also praised the team behind the series.
“We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut. The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
Leading the cast is Alice Halsey (Lessons in Chemistry) as Laura Ingalls, the spirited young heroine of the novels. She stars alongside Skywalker Hughes (I, Object) as Laura’s older sister Mary, Luke Bracey (Hacksaw Ridge) as Charles “Pa” Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald (Crime 101) as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls.
Behind the scenes, Sonnenshine serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel. Friendly also has a personal connection to the franchise, as his father Ed Friendly produced the original television adaptation that aired between 1974 and 1984.
The enduring popularity of Wilder’s books has helped keep the franchise alive for nearly a century. Since first being published in the 1930s, the Little House series has sold more than 73 million copies worldwide across more than 100 countries and has been translated into at least 27 languages. Even the classic 1970s TV series continues to attract viewers, reportedly racking up over 13 billion minutes of viewing in 2024 alone.
‘Little House On The Prairie‘ Season 1 premieres Wednesday, 9th July 2026 on Netflix.
