A new episode of the Geektown Radio podcast has landed, and this week we cover everything from the return of Sherlock Holmes in his teenage years, to casting news for Prime Video’s ‘Life Is Strange’, to the ever-growing mystery surrounding a possible Firefly reunion.
We also chat about what we’ve been watching recently, including horror chatter, social media film reviews, and a deep dive into a chronological playthrough of The Last of Us Part II. On Dave’s side of things there’s a look at ‘Young Sherlock‘, the new ITV drama ‘Gone‘, the final run of ‘Outlander‘, and a new game called Aethus.
Meanwhile, in TV news, there are some big endings announced this week. ‘The Bear’ will conclude with Season 5, ITV has confirmed there will be no third series of ‘Ridley’, and ‘Miss Scarlet’ is heading into its final seventh season. Apple TV has also cancelled ‘Palm Royale’, while Channel 4 has axed ‘The Inheritance’ after one series.
Thankfully, there’s also plenty of renewal news to balance things out. ‘High Potential‘ has been picked up for Season 3 at ABC, ‘Doc’ is returning with another rare 22-episode order on Fox, Netflix has renewed ‘The Night Agent’ for Season 4, and ABC has given ‘9-1-1’ a tenth season alongside another run for ‘9-1-1: Nashville’.
Elsewhere, Richard Osman is stepping down as host of House of Games, the BBC has picked up Season 2 of ‘I, Jack Wright‘, and ITVX has set a UK premiere date for ‘The Devil’s Hour’ Season 1.
We also look at some interesting new projects in development. Paramount+ and MGM+ are setting sail with a new TV version of ‘Treasure Island’, starring David Oyelowo (Selma, Silo) as Long John Silver and Hayley Atwell (Marvel’s Agent Carter, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) as Bess Hawkins.
Meanwhile, Prime Video’s adaptation of the hit game ‘Life Is Strange’ has cast Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) and Tatum Grace Hopkins (The Queen of Versailles) as Chloe and Max, bringing the time-bending mystery to the screen.
And then there’s the curious case of Firefly… Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) has been posting videos visiting members of the original cast, including Gina Torres (Suits), Morena Baccarin (Homeland), Sean Maher (The Magicians), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Jewel Staite (Stargate Atlantis), and Adam Baldwin (Chuck). Each video hints that “something is happening,” while carefully not explaining what that something actually is.
Fillion has already confirmed it isn’t a convention or podcast appearance, so the speculation machine is now running at full power. Could it be a film? A new series? Animation? A table read? A particularly elaborate group lunch? At this point, nobody knows.
As always, we round things off with highlights for the week ahead on TV, including ‘Scarpetta’, the final season of ‘Solar Opposites’, ‘Virgin River’ Season 7, and the new ‘Yellowstone’ spin-off ‘Madison’.
