Geektown Radio Episode 492: ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’, ‘Bait’, ‘Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen’ & ‘Pretty Lethal’

by Dave Elliott

This week on Geektown Radio, Dave is joined by Domingos for an episode packed with dark comedy, horror, action, and the usual Geektown mix of TV, film and gaming chat. Leading the charge this time are Domingos’ thoughts on ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’, Netflix’s creepy new limited series ‘Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen’, Prime Video comedy ‘Bait’, and the ballerina-meets-bloodshed thriller ‘Pretty Lethal’.

Domingos kicks things off with ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’, the follow-up to the gleefully unhinged original, which sounds like it has gone even bigger, even madder, and somehow even more murderous. With Samara Weaving (The Babysitter, Scream VI) back in the middle of the chaos, plus Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wolf Pack) clearly having the time of her life in villain mode, it sounds like the sequel leans hard into its rich-people-are-terrifying energy while expanding the mythology into something far more bonkers. Think violent family power struggles, swords, sinister contracts and a whole lot of havoc.

He also dives into ‘Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen’, which, as the title rather bluntly suggests, is not exactly a breezy wedding drama. The Netflix limited series follows a bride-to-be in the run-up to her wedding, only for things to spiral into something much darker, stranger and bloodier. Domingos is very careful not to spoil where it all goes, but the takeaway is that it is atmospheric, unsettling and built more around dread and psychology than simple jump scares. So yes, not ideal pre-wedding viewing if you are already nervous about seating plans.

The other review highlight from Domingos is ‘Pretty Lethal’, a stylish thriller about a group of elite ballerinas who end up trapped in the sort of place where absolutely nobody sensible would stay the night. With Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) overseeing the madness, the film sounds like it has plenty going for it visually, particularly in the way it mixes dance, violence and pulpy action. It may not quite land every beat of its story, but it does at least seem to know exactly what sort of wicked little midnight movie it wants to be.

On Dave’s side of things, the big TV pick this week is Bait, the new Prime Video comedy co-created by and starring Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal, The Night Of). The setup is wonderfully sharp, with a struggling actor accidentally becoming the centre of a media storm after auditioning for James Bond, and from there it spins into a smart, funny and very pointed comedy about casting, fame and who gets to inherit iconic roles. It also sounds like a very cheeky way for Amazon to poke the Bond conversation without having to actually answer it yet.

Dave is also still making his way through The Pitt, which continues to sound every bit as intense and brilliant as people have been saying, alongside more ‘Harley Quinn’ Season 5 chaos. There is also a quick update on Geekstorians, which is now back with Season 2 and, rather importantly, is currently nominated for a Webby Award. So yes, not a bad week for Geektown in general.

In the news section, there is the usual round-up of renewals, cancellations and assorted TV chaos. ‘The Runarounds’ has been cancelled by Prime Video after one season, ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ is ending with a four-part finale this summer, and Prime has apparently shelved ‘007: Road to a Million’ after two series. On the renewal side, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ somehow continues its march into eternity with Season 23, ‘Taskmaster’ has been renewed for another six series, Lynley is back for a second run, and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has scored a Season 2 renewal, which is perhaps less surprising when the creator also happens to be running Lucasfilm.

There is also some fresh air date news, including ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 2 landing in June on Netflix, ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ returning to the BBC in May, and ‘Saint-Pierre’ arriving on U&Alibi later this month. Dave and Domingos also touch on the live-action ‘Masters of the Universe’ trailer, which appears to be embracing the fact that if you are making a He-Man film, there is really no point pretending it should not be at least a bit gloriously cheesy.

Elsewhere, the episode also covers the new ‘Peaky Blinders’ series led by Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocketman), Brian Cox (Succession, Deadwood) joining ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2, and the TV adaptation of ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ heading to Peacock with Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door involved. Which means, as usual, there is a lot going on and at least half of it sounds like something that should not work but probably will.

As ever, the show rounds up what is coming to screens next week too, including ‘The Boys’ final season, ‘The Copenhagen Test’, ‘The Testaments’, ‘Taskmaster’, ‘The Miniature Wife’, ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’ and ‘Euphoria’ Season 3.
