‘Code of Silence’ Series 2 Begins Filming With Rose Ayling-Ellis & New Cast

by Dave Elliott

Filming is officially underway on Series 2 of Code of Silence, with Rose Ayling-Ellis MBE (EastEnders) returning as Alison Brooks alongside a mix of familiar faces and a sizeable batch of new additions to the ITV thriller.

The BAFTA-winning Mammoth Screen drama returns with another six-part story, picking up two years after the events of the first series. Alison has now completed her forensic lip-reading training with the police and finds herself drawn into a high-stakes surveillance operation involving Ruby Dowling, played by Emily Head (Whitstable Pearl, The Inbetweeners).

Ruby becomes caught up in a sophisticated money-laundering syndicate and is arrested after illicit cash is discovered hidden in her car. Released on bail, she finds herself trapped between the police and some extremely dangerous criminals. When Ruby is then brutally attacked, DI James Marsh and his team are left trying to work out exactly what happened.

Returning alongside Rose Ayling-Ellis are Andrew Buchan (Black Doves, Passenger) as DI James Marsh, John Bishop (Doctor Who, The Accused), Nathan Armarkwei Laryea (The Witcher, Doctor Who) as DS Ben Lawford, and Fifi Garfield (Coffee Morning Club, Deaf Funny).

The new cast includes Jonah Hauer-King (A House of Dynamite, The Tattooist of Auschwitz) as DS Daniel Henshaw, Jo Joyner (Little Disasters, Ackley Bridge), Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey, The Gallows Pole), John Hollingworth (Poldark, The Crown), Sasha Desouza-Willock (Vengeance: Murder on the Heath, London Kills) as DC Lizzie Silver, and Emily Head as Ruby.

As Alison is tasked with decoding crucial CCTV footage, her lip-reading expertise puts her right at the heart of the investigation. However, the deeper she digs, the more the case begins to expose secrets and threats much closer to home. With the criminals closing in and loyalties becoming increasingly complicated, Alison may find that discovering the truth makes her the next target.

“I am so happy to be back on set with the brilliant cast and crew that made working on the first series such a delight and I’m looking forward to welcoming new members of the team too,” commented Rose Ayling-Ellis.

Creator and writer Catherine Moulton added:

“I’m thrilled to be bringing Alison back for a second series. Now she’s officially part of the police team she’s keen to make her mark. Faced with her first murder investigation, she struggles to balance her determination to uncover the killer with the limits of her new police role. But blurred boundaries lead to divided loyalties, and her detective’s instincts, combined with her unique skill as a lip reader and close attention to detail, tell her there’s so much more to this case than meets the eye.”

The first series of ‘Code of Silence’ proved a major hit for ITV, with its opening episode consolidating to 7.5 million viewers and the full box set generating more than 20 million streams. The production also continues its commitment to authentic representation both on and off screen, with Deaf, disabled and neurodiverse talent working across the cast and crew.

Joseph Shrubb returns as producer, with Meenu Gaur directing episodes one to three and Nirpal Bhogal directing episodes four to six. Catherine Moulton is joined on the writing team by Genevieve Barr, Melissa Bubnic, Kevin Rundle and Nicola Wilson.

Code of Silence’ Series 2 is produced by Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios, with BritBox as the North American commissioner. The first series is available to stream now on ITVX and STV Player in the UK, and on BritBox in the US and Canada.
