Netflix’s New ‘THE ONE PIECE’ Anime Sets Sail In 2027 From WIT Studio

Netflix has announced that THE ONE PIECE will set sail in February 2027, with the new anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved pirate saga heading back to where Monkey D. Luffy’s grand adventure began.

To be clear, this is not the much-loved ‘One Piece’ anime series, which launched in 1999 and is still going strong, nor is it Netflix’s live-action ‘One Piece’ series, which premiered in 2023. Instead, ‘THE ONE PIECE’ is a brand-new animated adaptation of the original manga, starting again from the East Blue Saga with WIT Studio at the helm.

The new series comes from WIT Studio, the animation house behind Spy x Family and the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, working alongside Shueisha, Fuji Television Network and Toei Animation Co. Rather than continuing the long-running anime, ‘THE ONE PIECE’ is described as a fresh adaptation of the original manga, reimagining the East Blue Saga with modern animation techniques and a new creative team.

The first season will cover the opening 50 chapters of the manga, taking viewers back to the beginning of Luffy’s journey as the aspiring pirate sets out in search of the legendary One Piece treasure. Netflix says Season 1 will run for seven episodes, with a total runtime of around 300 minutes, and will build towards Luffy’s encounter with Sanji, the sous-chef of the floating restaurant Baratie.

The East Blue Saga is where fans first meet Luffy and the early members of the Straw Hat crew, as he begins assembling his wonderfully chaotic pirate family. It is also the part of the story that introduces the world, the dream, the rubber-limbed heroics, and the deeply dangerous idea that one determined boy with a straw hat can cause absolute havoc across the seas.

Netflix has also released a first-look image from the new adaptation, showing young Luffy at Partys Bar in Windmill Village alongside Red-Hair Pirates captain Shanks, first mate Benn Beckman, and bar owner Makino. The streamer has also shared a sneak peek at concept art for Shanks, giving fans an early taste of how this version of the story will look.

Behind the scenes, the new anime is directed by Masashi Koizuka (Attack on Titan, Moonrise), with Hideaki Abe as assistant director. Taku Kishimoto (Sakamoto Days) handles series composition, while Kyoji Asano (Spy x Family, Attack on Titan) and Takatoshi Honda (In/Spectre) serve as character designers and chief animation directors.

Eiichiro Oda’s ONE PIECE manga first launched in 1997 and has since become one of the biggest comic franchises in the world, selling more than 600 million copies globally as of March 2026. The original anime adaptation began in 1999 and has been running for more than 20 seasons. Netflix’s live-action adaptation premiered in 2023, with Seasons 1 and 2 now streaming, and Season 3 also due to arrive in 2027.

It does mean 2027 is shaping up to be a rather large year for ONE PIECE on Netflix. Between the live-action Straw Hats continuing their voyage and this new animated retelling of the East Blue Saga, Luffy may need a bigger boat. Or at least a bigger release calendar.
