Netflix has announced that ‘The Night Agent‘ will come to an end with its upcoming fourth season, as cameras begin rolling on what is being billed as a “thrilling, definitive” concluding chapter for Peter Sutherland.
The action thriller, led by Gabriel Basso (Juror #2) as Peter Sutherland, has become one of Netflix’s major global hits since launching, following the low-level FBI agent as he is pulled deeper and deeper into conspiracies, betrayals, political corruption and the sort of job where “answering the phone” really should come with significantly better hazard pay.
Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan (The Shield) says the ending is something he has had in mind for some time.
“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” he says.
Season 3 saw Peter pushed to his limits as he investigated a dark-money network, forcing him to question his alliances and confront corruption at the highest level of government. The finale left a number of questions hanging, with Ryan previously describing the ending as “meant to be a launching pad for Season 4.”
The fourth and final season is now in production in Los Angeles, with Titus Welliver (Bosch), Li Jun Li (Babylon), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) and Elizabeth Lail (You) among the previously announced additions to the cast.
The decision to give ‘The Night Agent’ a planned ending rather than simply letting it vanish into the Netflix fog is probably a good thing. The series has always been built around escalation, with Peter dragged from one conspiracy into an even bigger one, so giving him a proper final mission feels like a much stronger move than stretching things until everyone involved needs a conspiracy board just to remember who betrayed whom.
The series has also been a major performer for Netflix. Season 3 debuted in the Global Top 10, while the release also pushed Seasons 1 and 2 back onto the list. Across its run so far, the show has spent 27 weeks in the Global Top 10 and reached No. 1 in 87 countries.
“I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans,” says Ryan. “We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
