MGM+ has released a first look at ‘American Hostage’, a new eight-part psychological thriller starring Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Fargo), which is set to premiere internationally this autumn, including in the UK.
The series comes from Sony Pictures Television and is co-created and executive produced by Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Night Agent) and Eileen Myers (Big Love, Masters of Sex). Based on the acclaimed first season of the scripted podcast of the same name, the drama tells the harrowing true story of Fred Heckman, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter who found himself dragged into the centre of a terrifying real-life hostage crisis in the 1970s.
Hamm stars as Fred Heckman, whose ordinary day takes a rather dramatic turn when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on Heckman’s popular radio news programme. What follows is a real-time life-or-death struggle, as those involved attempt to prevent an already desperate situation from spiralling even further out of control.
“The combination of prolific producers Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, a singular talent like Jon Hamm, and our partners at Sony Pictures Television, is a match made in MGM+ heaven,” said Michael Wright, global head of MGM+. “This is a fascinating story about real people engaged in a real-time life-or-death struggle to keep a desperate hostage situation from spinning out of control, and we’re thrilled to bring it to audiences around the world.”

Alongside Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Fred Heckman, the series stars Giovanni Ribisi (Sneaky Pete) as Tony Kiritsis, Mireille Enos (The Killing) as Barbara Heckman, Kristoffer Polaha (Life Unexpected) as Dick Hall, and William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) as Ben Hairston. The recurring cast includes Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom) as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally, and Kat Cunning (Trinkets) as Ibby Hall.
The series is executive produced by Ryan, Myers, Hamm, Connie Tavel, Marney Hochman, Sharon Hoffman, Shawn Christensen and Gabriel Mason.
‘American Hostage’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on MGM+ in the UK in Autumn 2026. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
