HBO is heading back to Derry for another dose of nightmare fuel, as ‘IT: Welcome to Derry‘ has officially been renewed for a second season.
The Warner Bros. Television series will be travelling even further back into the town’s blood-soaked history for Season 2. This time, the story takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centres on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who make the spectacularly poor decision to stop in Derry to buy ammunition, only to encounter something considerably worse than the law.
The renewal follows an impressive debut for ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’, with HBO saying the series has ranked among the top four series premieres globally in HBO Max history. All eight episodes of the first season are currently available to stream on HBO Max.
Brad Caleb Kane will return as showrunner for Season 2, with filmmakers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti continuing as executive producers through their Double Dream production company. The drama expands the world of Stephen King’s IT novel and the vision established by Andy Muschietti’s feature films IT and IT Chapter Two.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation. Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming.
Warner Bros. Television is also promising that the shift to 1935 will uncover another dark chapter from the town’s past.
“We know IT: WELCOME TO DERRY will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s for Season 2. We look forward to bringing fans back to the town of Derry to experience the next chapter and uncover even more of what lies beneath the surface,” said Clancy Collins White, President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Television.
Andy and Barbara Muschietti added: “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”
Alongside the Muschiettis and Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis and Dhana Gilbert serve as executive producers on the HBO and Warner Bros. Television production.
HBO has not yet announced a premiere date for ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 on HBO Max or on Sky in the UK.
