Prime Video clearly isn’t messing around with ‘Bloodaxe’, as the streamer has announced five new cast members for Season 2 of the historical drama, with filming now underway in Ireland. The slightly unusual part, of course, is that Season 1 still hasn’t premiered, so they’re getting well ahead of themselves with Erik Bloodaxe’s saga.
Joining Season 2 as a series regular is Gard Løkke (Home for Christmas, The Trip to the Northern Lights), alongside Melina Åkerman (Succedera Questa Notte, Granite Harbour), Kieran Bew (House of the Dragon, Beowulf), Sebastian Bull (2 Days, Azrael), and George Burgess (Beast, Spartacus: House of Ashur), who will all appear in recurring roles. Prime Video hasn’t revealed character details for any of the new additions yet.
As we reported back in June, Prime Video renewed ‘Bloodaxe’ for a second season before the first had even made it to screen, suggesting the streamer has a fair amount of confidence in its new Norse saga. Season 2 was set to begin filming in Ireland this summer, and cameras are now officially rolling.
Created, written and executive produced by Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst, ‘Bloodaxe’ follows the rise of legendary Norse raider Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, and his formidable wife Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, played by Jessica Madsen. The first season sees the pair fighting for the throne of Norway as rival factions, shifting loyalties and bloody betrayals threaten to tear the country apart, with other Scandinavian kings and a powerful English ruler also being drawn into the conflict.
The drama is produced by MGM Television, with Michael and Horatio Hirst also serving as showrunners. Morgan O’Sullivan, Steve Stark, Arturo Interian, John Weber and Sheila Hockin executive produce alongside them. Given Prime Video has already committed to a second run before audiences have seen a single episode, it certainly looks like the streamer is hoping this will become a major new historical franchise.
‘Bloodaxe’ Season 1 will premiere exclusively on Prime Video worldwide. A UK premiere date has not yet been announced.
