The BBC has finally pinned down the return of ‘Blue Lights‘, confirming the acclaimed Belfast police drama will be back on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this September. The broadcaster has also released some new key art featuring Grace, Tommy and Annie, but the rather more useful information is that we now know when the new episodes actually arrive.
Series 4 finds Constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster and Annie Conlon three years into their jobs as response officers and very much no longer the wide-eyed recruits we first met. Unfortunately, experience does not appear to be making life any easier. The trio are operating at their limit as a new threat hits the streets, one which the police are struggling to contain.
Meanwhile, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff drags a dangerous, long-buried secret into the open, causing problems both within the police and across Belfast’s criminal underworld. With Grace, Tommy and Annie also facing major decisions about their futures, the new run looks set to put all three under some serious pressure.
Siân Brooke (Sherlock, Trying) returns as Grace Ellis, alongside Martin McCann (Trespasses, Hostage) as Stevie Neil, Katherine Devlin (The Day Of The Jackal, Vikings) as Annie Conlon and Nathan Braniff (Blue Lights) as Tommy Foster.
The returning ensemble also includes Joanne Crawford (Outlander: Blood of My Blood) as Chief Inspector Helen McNally, Andi Osho (The Sandman, I May Destroy You) as Sandra Cliff and Frank Blake (Say Nothing, Normal People) as Shane Bradley.
Series 4 also sees Richard Dormer (The Day of the Jackal, Game of Thrones) return as Gerry Cliff for a special one-off episode. Cathy Tyson (Dune: Prophecy, Black Ops) is back as Dana Morgan, alongside Hannah McClean (Malpractice) as solicitor Jen Robinson, Jonathan Harden (Time, Mix Tape) as Inspector Jonty Johnston and Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters, Censor) as intelligence officer Paul ‘Colly’ Collins.
All six episodes will be available from 6am on BBC iPlayer on launch day, while the opening episode airs on BBC One at 9pm that evening. The new run lands in the same late-September window as Series 3, so fans have not had too long to wait for another trip back to Blackthorn.
‘Blue Lights’ is created and written by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, and produced by Two Cities Television with Gallagher Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. BBC Studios handles global sales, with the drama now sold in more than 160 territories.
