ITV has confirmed its new Richard Armitage and Annabel Scholey forensic drama ‘Winter‘ will premiere this September, with the entire six-part series dropping on ITVX on launch day alongside its debut on ITV1.
Richard Armitage (‘Missing You’, ‘Red Eye’, ‘Fool Me Once’) stars as Dr Ethan Winter, one of the most gifted forensic pathologists of his generation. His analytical ability and instinct for reading victims make him an invaluable asset to murder investigations, although his unconventional approach and tendency to ignore the rulebook can make things rather more complicated.
That brings him into partnership with DI Lauren Bell, played by Annabel Scholey (‘The Sixth Commandment’, ‘Rivals’, ‘The Split’), a meticulous and driven detective whose approach provides an interesting counterbalance to Winter’s more unorthodox methods.
Set in Bristol, ‘Winter’ follows the pair as they combine forensic insight with investigative work to tackle a different self-contained crime in each episode.
Running underneath those individual cases is a larger mystery. Winter remains haunted by the unsolved murder of someone close to him and has begun conducting his own unofficial investigation into the killing. Unsurprisingly, secretly poking around an unresolved murder while working alongside the police may not prove to be the healthiest of hobbies, and his obsession threatens to consume him as the series progresses.
The supporting cast includes Jamie Kenna (‘House of the Dragon’, ‘Brassic’), Carlotta Banat (Heads of State, ‘3 Body Problem’), Josh Barrow (‘Hostage’, ‘Vera’, Dear England), Adwoa Akoto (‘The Sandman’, ‘Surface’), Jay Taylor (‘Manhunt’, ‘Ten Percent’, Broken Bird), Rishi Rian (‘Ridley’, Damaged), Deirdre Mullins (‘Bad Sisters’, ‘The Couple Next Door’), Ellis Elijah (‘Mammoth’) and Evie Coles (‘The Lady Grace Mysteries’).
The drama comes from Eagle Eye Drama, part of ITV Studios, in co-production with MASTERPIECE and in association with ITV Studios.
David Allison (‘The Couple Next Door’) and Mark Greig (‘Ashes to Ashes’) adapted the series, with Dries Vos (‘The Couple Next Door’, ‘Professor T’) and Kaat Beels (‘Professor T’, ‘The Twelve’) directing. Matt Baker produces, while Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino executive produce for Eagle Eye Drama alongside Susanne Simpson for MASTERPIECE.
The full six-episode season will be available immediately on ITVX when the drama launches, while the opening episode will also air at 9pm on ITV1.
