Disney is getting into the spooky season spirit with ‘Coven Academy‘, a new supernatural teen drama from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle, which will arrive on Disney+ UK this October.
The newly released official trailer gives us a much bigger look at Crescent Veil, an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans where three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers are trying to get to grips with their powers, while dealing with ancient supernatural wars, forbidden romance and rather a lot of dangerous secrets.
At the centre of the story is Briar, played by Malina Pauli Weissman (A Series of Unfortunate Events), a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she is a witch. The trailer sees Briar struggling to control her newfound powers while also finding herself caught in a turbulent love triangle between Jake and Ollie.
Jake is played by Malachi Barton (Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, Camp Rock 3), a magnetic warlock with a dangerous edge, while Louis Thresher (Boarders) plays Ollie, a newly turned vampire who is very much part of the complicated supernatural relationship mix.
Joining them are Jordan Leftwich (The Family Switch) as Sasha, a deeply empathic student who can read minds, and Ora Duplass (Their Town) as Tegan, an irreverent witch with the ability to bend time.
On the slightly more adult side of the school, Tiffani Thiessen (White Collar, Beverly Hills, 90210) stars as Miss Graves, the formidable and glamorous head of the academy, while Devon Sawa (Chucky, Final Destination) guest stars as Mr. Cole, a brilliant and charismatic warlock professor.
The trailer, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Brutal’, leans heavily into the combination of magic, mystery and romance, with Briar’s arrival at Crescent Veil seemingly putting her right at the centre of whatever supernatural trouble is coming for the school and New Orleans.
Tim Federle created ‘Coven Academy’ and executive produces alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist. The series is produced by Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family.
In the USA, ‘Coven Academy’ launches first on Freeform, with the full season landing on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. UK viewers get the series on Disney+ that same day, making this one a suitably well-timed addition to the streamer’s Halloween line-up.
