‘To The Bone’, the remarkable directorial feature debut of ‘Buffy’ alumni Marti Noxon will land on Netflix from next Friday (14th July) it has been announced. It’s a film we’ve been tracking for some time after we had the opportunity to interview some of the people involved when it debuted on the festival circuit a few months again.
Lily Collins (Okja, Mirror Mirror, The Last Tycoon) stars as Ellen, an unruly, 20-year-old anorexic girl who spent the better part of her teenage years being shepherded through various recovery programs, only to find herself several pounds lighter every time. Determined to find a solution, her dysfunctional family agrees to send her to a group home for youths, which is led by a non-traditional doctor (Keanu Reeves.)
Surprised by the unusual rules – and charmed by her fellow patients – Ellen has to discover for herself how to confront her addiction and attempt self-acceptance, in order to stand a chance against her demons.
Whilst this may sound like a heavy drama, Noxon brings her incredible aptitude for storytelling and dark wit to the film, which tackles the challenges of self-esteem with a refreshingly humorous – yet painstakingly honest – voice.
Featuring a career-making performance by Lily Collins, and pitch-perfect supporting roles by Keanu Reeves, Carrie Preston, and Lili Taylor, ‘To the Bone’ subverts expectations at every turn with its razor-sharp script, and its undiluted look at what young women face in living up to both society’s expectations of beauty, and their own.
We had a chance to interview a few of the people involved with the movie for Geektown Radio when it was first doing the festival circuits. The first interview was with Line Producer Shea Kammer, which starts at 34m 50s, who worked on the project with Marti.
The second interview was with our old friend Fil Eisler, who was the composer on the movie. His interview starts at 38m 05s.
You can watch ‘To The Bone’ when it streams onto Netflix UK from Friday, 14th July 2017.
