The Geektown Radio podcast returns for another packed episode, and this week I’m joined by Darryl from Hollywood North News to chat through all the latest TV, film and gaming news, along with the shows and games we’ve been watching recently.
Darryl kicks things off with ‘High Potential‘ Season 2, the crime procedural starring Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Morgan, a single mum with an exceptional mind who ends up helping the police solve cases. We discuss why the series works so well, its “clever outsider helping the police” setup, and how it has a bit of that classic Castle energy when it comes to mixing crime, comedy and character.
He also reviews ‘Mistletoe Murders’, the cosy crime drama starring Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy) as Emily Lane, a woman running a year-round Christmas shop who clearly has a much more complicated past than she’s letting on. It might sound like pure Hallmark fluff, but with a continuing mystery, a surprising amount of intrigue, and a very Canadian cast featuring the likes of David Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis) and Aaron Ashmore (Warehouse 13), there may be more going on here than mince pies and festive candles.
Darryl also takes a look at Jackie Chan action thriller The Shadow’s Edge, a Macau-set cops-and-thieves movie with Chan as a retired officer brought back in when a group of highly organised criminals start making the police look rather foolish. Plus, he reviews indie drama The Bearded Girl, following a young woman trying to escape life as part of a circus family and find her own identity.
On my side of things, I’ve been diving into Subnautica 2, which has launched into early access. The underwater survival sequel from Unknown Worlds keeps the base-building, exploration and “please don’t let that enormous sea monster eat me” energy of the original, but moves things to a new planet with new biomes, new technology, and a promising new story. Even in early access, it already looks like one to watch.
I also chat about ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill‘, the new Marvel one-shot style special starring Jon Bernthal (The Bear) as Frank Castle. It is not exactly a full series, more of a self-contained reintroduction to the character as he edges further into the MCU, but if you want 45 minutes of Frank Castle dealing with trauma in the only way Frank Castle really knows how, it does the job.
There’s also discussion of the ‘Outlander‘ finale, which has now wrapped after eight seasons, and its deliberately ambiguous ending. Plus, we look at ‘Good Omens 3’, which brings David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Michael Sheen (Staged) back as Crowley and Aziraphale for one final 90-minute outing. Despite originally being planned as a full season, the finale manages to land the plane rather beautifully.
Over in the TV news section, we cover ‘The Lincoln Lawyer‘ ending with Season 5 on Netflix, Channel 4 cancelling Pushers, and a huge batch of BBC comedy renewals, including Amandaland, Black Ops, Such Brave Girls, Things You Should Have Done, Mammoth and Two Doors Down.
There are also renewals for ‘Prisoner‘ at Sky, Running Point, My Life with the Walter Boys, Jury Duty, ‘Reacher‘, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and more. We also run through new air date updates for Ride with Norman Reedus, Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, VisionQuest, and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power‘ Season 3.
Plus, Prime Video gives fantasy adaptation ‘Fourth Wing‘ a series order, with Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House) set as showrunner, while Peacock starts development on a live-action Fast & Furious TV series with Vin Diesel producing. Because apparently the family can never truly rest.
We then finish things off with the usual look at next week’s TV highlights, including Jack Ryan, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, SkyMed, The Boroughs, PONIES, Two Weeks in August, Dear England, Brokenwood Mysteries, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, ‘Rick and Morty’, and Who Do You Think You Are?
