‘Narcos’ is in for a bit of a shakeup as the show heads into its 4th season. Having spent it’s first three outings dealing with the Columbian drug cartels, season 4 with see them head to 70’s/80’s Mexico. A new country and timeframe mean new faces, and last night, Netflix announced Michael Pena & Diego Luna will be joining the cast.
Michael Pena has been making waves in Hollywood ever since his performance in Paul Haggis’ Oscar-winning film ‘Crash’. He’s since gone on to star in ‘American Hustle’, ‘The Martian’ and numerous other movies. However, to us geeks, it’s his stand out performance as the wonderfully convoluted storyteller, Luis, in ‘Ant-Man’ where he really popped. A role he’s set to reprise in the upcoming ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ movie.
Diego Luna was introduced to worldwide audiences with his starring role in the award-winning ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’, alongside Gael Garcia Bernal for director Alfonso Cuaron. However, I suspect most of you will recognise him from his part as Cassian Andor in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’. He will next be seen in the films ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ for Woody Allen and Sony’s remake of 90’s classic, ‘Flatliners’.
‘Narcos’ Season 4 has just begun filming in Mexico City and will explore the rise of the Guadalajara cartel. This is an interesting shift, as that particular cartel rose to power in the 70’s and 80’s, whereas season 3 of ‘Narcos’ ended its story in the 90’s. That means this season will effectively be running parallel to the previous seasons, rather than a continuation.
“The origins of the Guadalajara cartel are in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so Narcos is going back in time,” showrunner Eric Newman commented. This means Pedro Pascal, who starred as DEA agent Javier Pena, is no longer the lead on the series, although the Columbian and Mexico cartels did interact with each other, so it’s possible we may see him back in a guest role at some point.
Exactly what roles Pena and Luna will be playing is being kept under wraps for the moment, but we will let you know when we hear more.
