Fox Cancels ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ & ‘The Last Man On Earth’

This is one that’s as painful for me to write as it is for you to read… US network Fox have cancelled Brooklyn Nine-Nine & The Last Man On Earth‘.

Created by the ‘Parks and Rec’ pairing of Dan Goor and Michael Schur ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ stars Andy Samberg as Det. Jake Peralta, a talented but carefree detective at Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct. Andre Braugher plays the captain of the precinct, whilst Terry Crews plays Holt’s next-in-command – a muscle-bound human mountain who loves nothing more than his three little daughters, except for a fresh carton of full-fat yoghurt.

It’s really heartbreaking to see this show go as it’s one of the funniest shows on tv right now, with a wonderful heart to the series. Since it’s debut on September 2013 ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ has won Golden Globes, Emmys, and Critics’ Choice Television Awards. Unfortunately, although fans of the show really REALLY love it, it would seem the wider audience isn’t large enough to support the series. It also didn’t help that Fox bounced it around the schedules…

Technically, it isn’t an ‘in-house’ series for Fox, so it would be possible the show’s producers could try and shop it somewhere else. Although I will stress, it’s extremely rare for a show to get picked up by another network.

The other stab through the heart was ‘The Last Man On Earth’ being cancelled after 4 seasons, although this was rather more expected as its numbers have been on the decline for a while.

From writer/producer Will Forte and produced by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the show followed Phil (Forte) as the last survivor on Earth after a virus wipes out the male population of the planet… Except he soon discovers he isn’t, but the people he is now stuck with aren’t exactly the best company. The show received five Emmy nominations during it’s run.

Along with these two comedies, Fox also cancelled ‘The Mick’, although that never aired this side of the pond.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ aired on E4 in the UK, and ‘The Last Man On Earth’ aired on Dave.
