#SDCC – Amazon Panel Roundup: ‘Jack Ryan’, ‘Lore’, ‘Good Omens’, & Sam Esmail’s ‘Homecoming’

Whilst most of us on this side of the pond were asleep last night, Amazon presented a panel at San Diego Comic-Con unveiling more information about a bunch of their upcoming shows – Good Omens,Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Lore Season 2, The Tick Season 2, The Expanse Season 4 and Homecoming, a new psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts from Mr Robot’s Sam Esmail.

Good Omens

Whilst Amazon didn’t release an actual trailer for ‘Good Omens’, they did come with a poster (below) and some behind-the-scenes footage (above) of the much anticipated six-part fantasy drama.

‘Good Omens’ stars Michael Sheen (‘Masters of Sex’) as the somewhat fussy angel and rare book dealer Aziraphale, and David Tennant (‘Doctor Who’, ‘Broadchurch’) as the fast living demon Crowley, both of whom have lived amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and of each other. So it’s really terrible news for both of them that, if Heaven and Hell have their way, the world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis has risen, tempers are flaring. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are ready to ride. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan… except that someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist…

The show will be brought to the screen by the highly acclaimed director Douglas Mackinnon, whose credits include ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Outlander’ and the standalone Victorian episode of ‘Sherlock: The Abominable Bride’, winner of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie last year. The series is written by Neil Gaiman (‘American Gods’), who also serves as showrunner, and is based on the well-loved and internationally bestselling novel by Terry Pratchett and Gaiman.

The spectacular cast sees Sheen and Tennant star alongside Jon Hamm As Archangel Gabriel, Miranda Richardson as Madame Tracy, Michael McKean as Shadwell, Jack Whitehall as Newt, Adria Arjona as Anathema Device, Anna Maxwell Martin as Beelzebub, Mark Gatiss & Steve Pemberton as Harmony & Glozier, David Morrissey as Captain Vincent, and Derek Jacobi as the Metatron.

The major additional casting news from the panel was that Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actress Frances McDormand (‘Three Billboards…’, ‘Fargo’, ‘Olive Kitteridge’) would lend her vocal talent to the series as “the voice of God”!

Good Omens‘ will be realised on Amazon Prime (including in the UK) at some point in the first half of 2019, then comes to BBC Two at a later date.

Homecoming

‘Homecoming’ is a mind-bending psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts and directed by Sam Esmail (creator of ‘Mr. Robot’).

Heidi Bergman (Roberts) is a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a Geist Group facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life. Walter Cruz (Stephan James) is one of these soldiers, eager to begin the next phase of his life. Overseeing Heidi and the facility is Colin Belfast (Bobby Cannavale), an ambitious company man whose manic demands point to questionable motives. Four years later, Heidi has started a new life, living with her mother (Sissy Spacek) and working as a small-town waitress, when a Department of Defense auditor (Shea Whigham) comes to her with questions about why she left the Homecoming facility. Heidi begins to realize that there’s a whole other story behind the story she’s been telling herself.

Based on the popular podcast of the same name, ‘Homecoming’ is created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. The cast also includes Jeremy Allen White, Alex Karpovsky, Dermot Mulroney, among others.

Homecoming‘ premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, 2nd November 2018

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

‘Jack Ryan’ is one of the most anticipated new shows coming to Amazon next month, and the streaming service is so confident in it, they have already renewed if for a 2nd Season!

The series is a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the unexpected Tom Clancy hero. It centres on Jack Ryan, an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows the titular character as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that launches him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

The one-hour, eight-episode dramatic series stars John Krasinski (‘A Quiet Place’, ’13 Hours’) as Jack Ryan, as well as Wendell Pierce (‘The Wire’) as James Greer and Abbie Cornish (‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’) as Cathy Mueller. It is executive produced by Carlton Cuse (‘Lost’, ‘Bates Motel’) and Graham Roland (‘Fringe’, ‘Prison Break’), who created the series for television and serve as co-showrunners. Academy Award-nominated director Morten Tyldum (‘The Imitation Game’) directed the pilot and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes produce the show.

The little bit of new info they dropped at SDCC was that Noomi Rapace will play Harriet “Harry” Baumann, a highly capable, sharply intelligent and intoxicatingly charming BND agent (Germany’s Secret Intelligence) who crosses paths with Jack Ryan in South America.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan‘, will debut Friday, 31st August 2018 on Amazon Prime Video.

Lore, Season 2

‘Lore’ explores the real-life frightening and disturbing tales that give rise to modern-day myths and legends. Season two will feature new tales from the podcast, as well as original stories not yet available in podcast form, and will star new cast members. The hybrid series will continue to feature narration, archive footage and animation to complement the filmed segments.

The show comes from exec producers Ben Silverman (‘The Office’), Howard T. Owens (‘Killing Kennedy’), Gale Anne Hurd (‘The Walking Dead’), Brett-Patrick Jenkins (‘Face Off’), Jon Halperin and Mark Mannucci (‘A Year in Space’), as well as showrunner Sean Crouch (‘The Exorcist’, ‘Numb3rs’).

At SDCC, Amazon dropped the little teaser trailer, which you can see above and also announced ‘Lore‘ Season 2 would arrive on Friday, 19th October 2018.

The Expanse, Season 4

As anyone who has been following the news will know, epic sci-fi series ‘The Expanse’ was rescued by Amazon for a 4th Season after Syfy, it’s US network, dropped the series.

‘The Expanse’ is based on the popular science fiction novels by James S. A. Corey and was co-created and written by Academy Award nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (‘Children of Men’). The cast of The Expanse includes three-time Golden Globe nominee Thomas Jane (‘Deep Blue Sea’), Oscar-nominee Shohreh Asgdashloo (‘Star Trek: Beyond’) and Steven Strait (‘The Covenant’).

Whilst Amazon didn’t have a trailer or air date announcement at SDCC, the did have this lovely video of the cast and creators thanking fans for their help in saving the show.

The Tick,  Season 2

The wonderfully bonkers superhero comedy ‘The Tick’ is returning for a 2nd Season. Again, no date or trailer, but they have released this little behind-the-scenes look at the sets, including the offices of new character, Tyrannosaurus Rathbone!

In the first season of The Tick, we found a world where superheroes and villains have been real for decades. Arthur (Griffin Newman), an unassuming accountant with no superpowers, becomes embroiled in the middle of the battle between good and evil. When he realizes that his city is owned by a global supervillain who was long thought to be dead, he struggles to uncover the conspiracy. As he becomes obsessed with the conspiracy, most people think he’s crazy. One person who believes Arthur is a mysterious new ally, The Tick (Peter Serafinowicz), who is a bizarre blue superhero who may just be a figment of Arthur’s imagination.

I think it’s safe to say, with all this, plus new seasons of ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’, ‘The Man In The High Castle’, ‘The Grand Tour’, and many other shows, you’re not going to be short of things to watch!
