Geektown BTS Podcast 28: ‘The Mandalorian’ Pixomondo VFX Supervisor Goran Backman Interview

Welcome to the latest Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. On this episode, I’m chatting with Goran Backman, VFX Supervisor for Pixomondo on superb Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

As you’d expect with a show like ‘The Mandalorian’, there we a lot of visual effects sequences split between various VFX companies. One of the areas Pixomondo specialised in for the series was the creature creation. This led to the company developing some innovative techniques to produce various alien animals, most notably the Blurrgs, which Mando has to learn to tame and ride. They also produced versions of the classic Dewbacks, along with the “flying beast” Reptavian, the tiny Gorvin Snu lizard, and the Qartuum… otherwise known as the “space goat”!

Outside of the various creatures, Pixomondo worked on the Pit Droids, various environment such as Mos Eisley, the Jawa camp, Arvala, lava fields and even got a chance to play with the Mandalorian’s ship, The Razor Crest.

‘The Mandalorian’ has been nominated for 15 Emmys and already picked up 5 for Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. If you like this interview, we also spoke with the show’s (now Emmy-winning!) Music Editor Ryan Rubin, on Episode 25, which you can find here.
