Marvel Finds its ‘Ms. Marvel’ for Disney+ Series

After the recent news that Tatiana Maslany had landed the role of ‘She-Hulk’ in the upcoming Disney+ series, we now have word that they’ve also found their Ms. Marvel too.

The young actress to win the gig, is newcomer Iman Vellani, who takes the part of Kamala Khan. Written by Bisha K. Ali (Hulu’s ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’), the series follows the teenage Pakistani-American from a religious family in New Jersey. In the comic book storyline, she discovers she has Inhuman genes and gains shapeshifting abilities. She names herself Ms. Marvel after her idol, Carol Danvers, and employs an idealistic attitude as much as any power to make the world a better place.

Whilst this is the first major “Hollywood” role for Vellani, she clearly loves the industry. In 2019 she was part of the Toronto Film Festival Next Wave Committee, which is a group of 12 young film enthusiast students from diverse backgrounds, who help plan major teen-oriented events at the festival. The students come from an extremely competitive pool of hopefuls and have to impress the TIFF leaders to earn one of the limited places.

The role of Kamala Khan is a large one for Marvel. Not only is the character due to appear in her own series, but Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has also said she will appear in future movies.

On the small screen, Vellani will be under the direction of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (‘Bad Boys for Life’), Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (‘A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness’) and director Meera Menon (‘The Magicians’, ‘Outlander’, ‘For All Mankind’), who will each take various episodes of the ‘Ms. Marvel’ series.

‘Ms. Marvel’ was one of the second batches of Marvel TV shows announced by Disney for the Disney Plus streaming service. First up we have WandaVision in December 2020, followed by The Falcon and Winter Soldier and Loki in 2021. They will then be followed by Hawkeye‘She-Hulk’‘Moon Knight’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’, although we don’t yet know exactly when or in which order they will land.

Ms. Marvel‘ and all the other Marvel tv series will premiere on Disney+ in the UK and worldwide.
