Sky has announced The Rising, an interesting-sounding new eight-part supernatural crime thriller, adapted from the Belgian series ‘Hotel Beau Séjour’ and due to begin filming in the Lake District next month.

‘The Rising’ is the story of Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard – ‘Still Star-Crossed’, ‘I Am Mother’), who discovers that she is dead. She’s scared and confused by this new existence. But, when she realises she has been murdered, she’s furious. She’s determined to find her killer and get justice, believing that it was someone she knew.

Impulsive and restless, Neve regrets never leaving her isolated community. And, as she comes to terms with her abilities, she begins to destabilise the lives of those she left behind. Particularly her estranged father, Tom (Daniel Ings – ‘I Hate Suzie’, ‘The Crown’) and her beloved mother Maria (Emily Taaffe – ‘Silent Witness’, ‘Little Bird’).

Neve is a disruptive, unsettling hero who should not exist, and she needs to find her purpose. She takes us through the investigation into her death, going where the police can’t. In the process, she uncovers deeply buried secrets and is forced to re-examine everything about her life and the people she cared about.

With nothing to lose but time, Neve will push for the truth even when it hurts. Her return forces everyone around her to change, confess, or start covering their tracks. But, it also reveals that there are others like her out there… With a distinctive tone and visual style, the series is a story about love, justice and the cost of pursuing the truth in a world that wants to keep it hidden.

The series is set to star a fresh line up of young emerging talent including Clara Rugaard (‘I Am Mother’) as protagonist Neve, Nenda Neururer (‘A Brief History of Struggle’) as the irreverent Alex Wyatt who has recently returned to the area after three years away and Solly McLeod (‘Boxing Day’) as Joseph Wyatt, Alex’s cousin and Neve’s long-standing boyfriend. Daniel Ings (‘I Hate Suzie’), Emily Taaffe (‘Rare Beasts’), Alex Lanipekun (‘Spooks’) and Robyn Cara (‘Ackley Bridge’) are also set to star.

“The Rising is a really fresh take on an atmospheric thriller and I’m hugely excited to bring this story to Sky, complete with a great line up of young, emerging talent,” comments Zai Bennett, Sky’s Managing Director of Content. The story of Neve takes audiences on a journey from mystery, suspense and horror, all set to the stunning scenic backdrop of The Lake District.”

Following the RTS-winning Sky Original ‘The Third Day’, ‘The Rising’ is the second in-house production from Sky Studios and the first to be produced entirely in-house. The Sky Original drama was commissioned by Zai Bennett, Managing Director of Content at Sky UK and Manpreet Dosanjh, Commissioning Editor for Sky Studios. Serena Thompson serves as Executive Producer for Sky Studios. The eight-part, one-hour episode series will be executive produced by Julian Stevens (‘The Fall’, ‘The Missing’) and Pete McTighe (‘A Discovery of Witches’).

“The unique concept behind The Rising grabbed me instantly,” adds EP Julian Stevens. “It’s a powerful story with a strong and unexpected protagonist at the heart of it. We explore subverting tropes throughout, giving agency to our central character and allowing much of narrative to be told from her perspective. It’s a pleasure to be working with Sky and our brilliant team on such a compelling and dynamic show.”

Ed Lilly (‘Industry’) will serve as lead director, followed by Thora Hilmarsdottir (‘Stella Blomkvist’). The series is written by Pete McTighe and Charlotte Wolf (‘The Last Kingdom’), alongside a writing team of Charlene James (‘A Discovery of Witches’), Roanne Bardsley (‘Free Rein’), Gemma Hurley (‘Host’) and Laura Grace (‘Das Boot’).

The Rising‘ is due to begin filming in the Lake District next month and will premiere on Sky One in 2022.
