‘Doctor Who’: Neil Patrick Harris Joins Series For 60th Anniversary

Russell T Davies has been raiding his actor toybox again, as he casts the irrepressible Neil Patrick Harris to join Doctor Who as part of the 2023 60th Anniversary run.

“It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris…,” said RTD. However, he continued in his usual teasing way, adding “…but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!”

Russell initially made the announcement on Instagram, saying “Neil Patrick Harris, welcome to Cardiff! Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it’s an honour and a hoot. Have fun!” This did prompt a hilarious exchange from RTD’s Master, John Simm, who commented “Ever?!”, to which Russell clarified “…this year xx.”

Neil Patrick Harris is, of course, probably best known for his work as Barney on ‘How I Met Your Mother’, and previously worked with RTD in the phenomenal ‘Its A Sin’. He’s also appeared in films such as ‘Starship Troopers’, ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’, and ‘Gone Girl’, and played Count Olaf in Netflix series ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’, along with starring in a string of acclaimed stage roles.

The ‘Doctor Who’ series next year is shaping up to be a really interesting proposition. Along with getting a new Doctor in the shape of Ncuti Gatwa, we also know David Tennant, Catherine Tate and Bernard Cribbins will be returning as some iteration of The Tenth Doctor, Donna and Wilf. They will be joined by ‘Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney as a character called Rose. We don’t officially know how she will fit into the story, although there are rumours she is possibly playing Donna’s daughter.

Before we get to all this, the current 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, will have her final 90-minute appearance in October 2022, which will see her Doctor regenerate. Behind the cameras, current showrunner, Chris Chibnall, hands the sonic screwdriver back to Russell T Davies, with a the series due to arrive in 2023 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations and the show’s 60th Anniversary.

Doctor Who‘ returns to BBC One in October 2022. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
