Trevor Noah has announced he will be stepping down as host of Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show‘ after seven years.
Trevor took over hosting duties following the departure of Jon Stewart in 2015. Despite having some very big shoes to fill, Trevor did an amazing job guiding the series through some very difficult times. Most notably, during the pandemic, he continued to broadcast from his home in New York as ‘The Daily Social Distancing Show’. They then produced a revamped version of the series, returning to the smaller studio in ViacomCBS’s headquarters without an audience, before eventually returning to their normal studio with an audience in April 2022.
“I remember when we first started, so many people thought it was a crazy bet, I still think it was a crazy choice, this random African,” commented Trevor in last night’s broadcast. “What a journey it’s been. It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s something that I never expected.”
The schedule for the series is obviously demanding, with episodes having to be prepped and delivered daily, with up-to-the-minute news for large portions of the year. That leaves very little time for anything else, and Trevor expressed how he wanted to get back to stand-up and travelling.
“I realised there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring. I miss learning other languages, I miss going to other countries and putting on shows. I miss just being everywhere and doing everything. I’m really grateful to a network who believed in this random comedian nobody knew on this side of the world,” he added. “I never dreamed that I would be here. I sort of felt like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I came in for a tour of what the previous show was, and then the next thing I know I was handed the keys. All I can say is thank you very much.”
No timing has been given for when Noah will make his final broadcast, or who may take over from him. Jordan Klepper has previously stepped in as guest host when Noah was out sick, however, he now has his own show on the network, so seems unlikely to become the regular host. Whether the job will go to any of the current correspondent team of Roy Wood Jr., Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Dulcé Sloan and Michael Kosta, or got to an outside name will be announced in due course.
‘The Daily Show‘ airs weekday on Comedy Central in the UK and USA.
