‘Handmaid’s Tale’: Prime Video To Share UK Premiere Rights To Season 5 With Channel 4

UK audiences will now have a choice of where to watch the 5th Season of The Handmaid’s Tale, as Amazon announces Prime Video will share the UK premiere rights to the drama with Channel 4 when the season launches later this year.

The relatively unique deal will see both Prime Video and Channel 4 co-premiere the series following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM earlier this year who produce and distribute the drama. Rather than remove the show from Channel 4, which aired the first four seasons in the UK, the Channel 4 and Amazon came to an agreement to share the drama.

“Over the series, The Handmaid’s Tale has remained reflective, high-quality and hard-hitting,” commented Nick Lee, head of acquisitions at Channel 4. “We’re thrilled Channel 4 and All 4 audiences will be returning to Gilead to see further justice dispensed in the next riveting instalment.”

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning series stars Elisabeth Moss as a handmaid in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birth rate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats fertile women as property of the state.

In the fifth season, June faces the consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Nick and Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.

The fifth season stars Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel and Sam Jaeger.

Last month it was announced the drama had been renewed for a sixth and final season. A follow-up series is in active development by Bruce Miller, based on ‘The Testaments’, the sequel novel by Margaret Atwood released in 2019.

The Handmaid’s Tale‘ Season 5 does not yet have a UK premiere date but is due to land later in 2022. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.
