After a phenomenal first season and a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, I’m extremely happy to report that Netflix has renewed ‘The Diplomat‘ for Season 2!
‘The Diplomat’ follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell – ‘The Amercians’), US diplomat who has spent most of her career smoothing out issues in hotspots and warzones, but finds herself unexpectedly thrust into the position of the US ambassador to the UK when a UK aircraft carrier is bombed in the Middle East. Tasked with stopping war from breaking out, she must navigate an international crisis in tandem with her rocky marriage to Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell – ‘Man in the High Castle’, ‘Victoria’, ‘Kaleidoscope’), a charming (and infuriating), veteran diplomat himself.
“We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it,” said series creator Debora Cahn. “We’re so glad we get to do it again.”
You can read our full review here, but if you haven’t gone to watch ‘The Diplomat’ yet, I really urge you to go and stream it on Netflix right now. It is billed as a “political thriller”, but it is far more of a dark dramedy similar in tone with something like ‘Succession’. Debora Cahn, whose previous work includes shows such as ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Homeland’, has created a brilliant, sharp, intelligent, and extremely funny series, and it totally deserves a second season… If only to resolve THAT cliffhanger! It is one of the best shows Netflix has ever commissioned.
“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show,” adds Executive Producer and star Keri Russell. “Dare I say it’s fun?”
Alongside Russell and Sewell, the series also stars Ato Essandoh (‘Chicago Med’, ‘Altered Carbon’) as Stuart Heyford, the Deputy Chief of Mission; Ali Ahn (‘Billions’, ‘Raising Dion’) as CIA Station Chief, Eidra Park; Rory Kinnear (‘Bond’ franchise, ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘Bank of Dave’) as the (somewhat Boris-like) UK Prime Minister, Nicol Trowbridge; David Gyasi (‘Carnival Row’, ‘Interstellar’) as Austin Dennison, the UK’s very British Foreign Secretary; Celia Imrie (‘Better Things’, ‘Dinnerladies’) as the shadowy Margaret Roylin; And Michael McKean (‘Better Call Saul’) as William Rayburn, President of the United States.
‘The Diplomat‘ Season 1 is out now to binge-watch on Netflix UK and worldwide (and I urge you to go and binge it!)
