Disney+ Sets Premiere Dates For Marvel’s ‘Loki’ Season 2, & ‘Echo’

Disney held their “Upfront” presentation to advertisers yesterday and dropped out a couple of premiere dates for some highly anticipated Marvel series – Loki Season 2, and Echo.

‘Loki’ stars Tom Hiddleston as the “God of Mischief” title character, when he lands in trouble with the bureaucratic TVA (Time Variance Authority) after absconding with the Tesseract.

For those of you needing a bit of a recap as to where we left things back at the end of season one, Loki and… Loki, aka Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), had both made it past the monster Alioth to reach the Citadel at the End of Time. Once inside, they encounter a man described as “He Who Remains”, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors (*ahem* currently…)

“He Who Remains” explained how he created the TVA after ending a multiversal war caused by his more evil variants. Its purpose was to stop any future multiversal wars by creating a singular timeline. He then offers them a choice – A. Kill him, and end the singular timeline, allowing free will, but also the multiverse to expand into chaos, most likely creating a new multiversal war… Or B. Replace him as his successors together in overseeing the timeline. Sylvie just wanted him dead and fights with Loki who wants her to consider the consequences. She pushes Loki through a portal landing him back at the TVA, and plunges a sword through “He Who Remains” heart… And the timeline begins to branch out exponentially…

Back at the TVA, Loki tries to warn Mobius about the threat from the expanding timelines and the threat from the evil “He Who Remains” variants. The only problem is, Mobius has no idea who Loki is… Looking around, Loki spots a statue of “He Who Remains” and realises he is in a different universe’s TVA…

Hiddleston is joined in the cast by Owen Wilson (Mobius), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Ravonna Renslayer), Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie), Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15 and Richard E. Grant (Classic Loki).

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (‘Moon Knight’, ‘The Endless’) direct and executive produce ‘Loki’ Season 2. Eric Martin (‘Loki’ S1, ‘Heels’) is head writer and exec produces, alongside Hiddleston and Michael Waldron. The series will air weekly.

‘Echo’ sees Alaqua Cox reprise her role from the ‘Hawkeye’ limited series as Maya Lopez, a deaf Native American superhero who has the talent to imitate any opponent’s fighting style.

When we last saw Maya, she was a leader of the Tracksuit Mafia, and was seeking revenge against Clint Barton, who killed her father, William Lopez, in his time as Ronin during the “Blip”. However, she eventually discovers it was her “uncle” Kingpin who orchestrated her father’s death, and confronts him. We don’t see exactly what happens at that point, but we do hear a gunshot…

Joining Cox in the series are Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Cody Lightning, and Graham Greene also star in undisclosed roles.

‘Echo’ sees Marion Dayre (‘Better Call Saul’, ‘The Act’) serve as head writer, with Sydney Freeland (‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’, ‘Reservation Dogs’) leading the directing team. Interestingly, in a change for Disney+, they are dropping the entire series in one go, rather than airing it weekly!

Loki‘ Season 2 premieres Friday, 6th October 2023, airing weekly, whilst ‘Echo‘ premieres Wednesday, 29th November 2023, with the entire series dropping as a boxset.
