‘Vigil’ Series 3 Trailer Takes Suranne Jones & Rose Leslie To The Arctic As BBC Sets August Return

by Dave Elliott

Things are getting very chilly for DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre, as the BBC releases an explosive new trailer for Vigil Season 3 ahead of its return later this month.

The six-part third season swaps submarines and military drones for the frozen landscape of the Arctic, sending Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster) and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) to a remote research station where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead.

The investigation quickly becomes rather more complicated than your average murder case. Amy and Kirsten find themselves trying to identify the killer while preventing a potential international confrontation, as rival nations compete for control of the Arctic and its increasingly valuable resources.

With tensions rising, the pair begin to question who they can trust, while both their careers and their relationship are put under pressure.

The new trailer also confirms the return of Dominic Mafham (The Musketeers) as Sir Ian Downing, alongside Gary Lewis (Outlander) as DSU Robertson, who continues to work closely with Amy and Kirsten.

There are plenty of new faces heading into the cold too. Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom, The Trip) plays Svalbard Chief of Police Henrick Becken, Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh, Wolfe) stars as microbiologist Shen Jia, and Tornike Gogrichiani (Extraction 2, Drops of God) plays Russian Colonel Fyodor.

Steven Miller (Dept. Q, Shetland) and Benjamin Wainwright (Maigret, Belgravia: The Next Chapter) join as Special Boat Service operators Mark Cunningham and Oli Pickford, respectively, while Danusia Samal (Red Eye, The Great) plays Jasmine Kelly, who works alongside Sir Ian Downing.

Also joining the cast are Eric Godon (In Bruges, Anna) as Mayor Korotayev and Amy Manson (Rebus, Bodies) as geologist Lorna McCallister.

The wider Season 3 cast includes Artur Zai Barrera (The Old Man, Lucky), Jordan Duvigneau (Mood, Stolen Girl), Kaisa Hammarlund (Hijack, Grace), Adam Fidusiewicz (FBI: International, A Gentleman in Moscow), Conor Berry (Karen Pirie, Schemers), Jason Tobin (A Thousand Blows, The Ballad of a Small Player), Steven Cree (All of You, Heads of State), Killian Coyle (Shetland, Endeavour), Derek Riddell (Industry, Happy Valley), Alma Prelec (Secret Service, Fifteen-Love), Dawn Sievewright (Undertow, Shetland) and Shereen Cutkelvin (Summerwater, Crime).

Season 3 of ‘Vigil’ was filmed in Svalbard and Scotland and once again comes from World Productions, the company behind Line of Duty, Showtrial and Until I Kill You. The drama was created by Tom Edge, who writes the new season alongside Tom Mair and Eve Hedderwick Turner.

Gareth Bryn (Karen Pirie, The Gathering) and Faye Gilbert (The Bay, The Tower) direct, with Marcus Wilson producing. Jake Lushington, Gaynor Holmes and Tom Edge serve as executive producers.

The BBC is also changing things up slightly with the release. Two episodes will arrive each week on BBC iPlayer, while BBC One will air the drama across Sunday and Monday nights.

Vigil‘ Season 3 premieres Sunday, 30th August 2026 on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with two episodes available weekly on iPlayer and episodes airing Sunday and Monday nights at 9pm on BBC One.
