‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Renewed For Season 2 & Adds Tatiana Maslany As Guest Star

by Dave Elliott

Paramount+ has announced that upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has already been renewed for a 2nd Season, before Season 1 hits the streaming service, and also that the brilliant Tatiana Maslany joins the cast in a guest role.

The announcements were made during a panel at New York Comic Con this weekend, which saw Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager, Starfleet Academy, Prodigy) make an unexpected on-stage appearance before introducing a surprise livestream straight from the set of ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’. The live stream (which you can see clips from below) included executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman, who is currently directing the series, as he announced that the series has been greenlit for a second season alongside cast members including Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner.

Produced by CBS Studios, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. The series will introduce viewers to this young group of cadets as they come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Tatiana Maslany is, of course, well known for her multi-role tour-de-force performance in the brilliant ‘Orphan Black’ (which you can watch right now in the UK on ITVX), and for playing the lead in Marvel’s wonderfully bonkers ‘She-Hulk’ series. She also has voiced various characters in Prime Video’s ‘Invincible’, and plays “Aja” in Netflix’s animated ‘Trollhunter’ franchise.

In addition to the aforementioned cast members, the series also features the incredible  Paul Giamatti (‘Billions‘, ‘The Holdovers’), who will play the first season’s antagonist — a man with an ominous past connected to one of the Academy’s cadets, and Gina Yashere (‘Bob Hearts Abishola’) as a Starfleet Academy instructor. They are joined by a number of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ cast reprising their roles including Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, Mary Wiseman as Tilly, and Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance.

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber. The series’ premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘ Season 1 does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Paramount+. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
