We now head into the “geekier” categories of the awards, kicking things off with the Best New & Returning Sci-fi Series of 2024. We had a couple of great entries which proved not all game-to-screen adaptations need to suck! We also got some wonderful original shows and book adaptations, plus the return of everyone’s favourite timelord. Here is what you voted for.
Best New Sci-fi Series
Nominees: 3 Body Problem, Season 1 – Netflix, Dark Matter, Season 1 – Apple TV+, Dune: Prophecy, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic, Fallout, Season 1 – Prime Video, Orphan Black: Echoes, Season 1 – ITVX, Sugar, Season 1 – Apple TV+, Twisted Metal, Season 1 – Paramount+
Bronze: Dune: Prophecy, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic
Silver: 3 Body Problem, Season 1 – Netflix
Gold Winner: Fallout, Season 1 – Prime Video
Despite some really tough competition from all sides bringing their A-Game sci-fi content, it was Prime Video’s ‘Fallout‘ which managed to land the top spot.
Adapted from the beloved video game franchise, and starring the ubiquitous Ella Purnell, director Jonathan Nolan, along with creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, managed to capture the fun and wonderfully dark humour of the game, without stepping over the same ground as the source material. It feels like a true extension of ‘Fallout’s post-apocalyptic world, but still accessible to both new and old fans. This is how you do a video game adaptation, and I can’t wait for Season 2!
Best Returning Sci-fi Series
Nominees: Doctor Who, Season 1 – BBC iPlayer, Silo, Season 2 – Apple TV+, Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5 (Final) – Paramount+, The Ark, Season 2 – Sky Sci-Fi, The Devil’s Hour, Season 2 – Prime Video, The Umbrella Academy, Season 4 (Final) – Netflix
Bronze: Silo, Season 2 – Apple TV+
Silver: The Umbrella Academy, Season 4 (Final) – Netflix
Gold Winner: Doctor Who, Season 1 – BBC
We used to have a saying, which was when ‘Doctor Who‘ is in a category, Doctor Who wins. However, with it going through a bit of a rough patch in previous years, that stopped being the case. However, with Russell T Davies back at the TARDIS console and Ncuti Gatwa getting his first full series as The Doctor, the show is back on top! After a hugely successful Christmas Special, the drama is due to return for more adventures in time and space in 2025.
