The BBC is heading back to Middlesbrough for another round of mischief, heart and cheeky Bloody Mams, as ‘Smoggie Queens’ has officially been renewed for a third series.
Created and written by RTS winner and BAFTA nominee Phil Dunning, the comedy follows a close-knit gang of friends who are fiercely proud of their North Eastern hometown and their small pocket of Middlesbrough’s LGBTQ+ community.
The new six-episode series will see Dickie, played by Phil Dunning, reunited with Mam, played by Mark Benton (Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators), Lucinda, played by Alexandra Mardell (Coronation Street), Sal, played by Patsy Lowe, and Stewart, played by Elijah Young. More returning and additional cast members will be announced later.
The renewal follows the acclaimed second series of ‘Smoggie Queens’, which arrived earlier this year, alongside the digital spin-off series ‘The Dickie Show’.
“The fact that Smoggie Queens is returning for a third series is testament to the brilliance of Phil Dunning and the entire creative team behind it. The show has carved out a unique place in British comedy with its unforgettable characters, razor-sharp humour and huge heart. The show continues to celebrate the people and spirit of Teesside with warmth, wit and authenticity, and we can’t wait to see what chaos the Smoggie Queens get themselves into next,” said Gregor Sharp, Commissioning Editor for the BBC.
Phil Dunning added: “So buzzing to be recommissioned for series 3! Thank you BBC! Going to have a cheeky Bloody Mam to celebrate.”
“I’m thrilled that the BBC is giving us another series. Phil and I love making this show so much, and the collaboration, care and creativity that every department brings to it is truly special. I can’t wait for us all to get back to the Boro and make another mad series!” commented series producer Chris Jones.
‘Smoggie Queens’ is produced by Hat Trick Productions, the company behind ‘Derry Girls’, ‘Outnumbered’, ‘Episodes’ and ‘Have I Got News For You’. Chris Jones returns as producer, with Gregor Sharp serving as Commissioning Editor for the BBC. Hat Trick International handles worldwide distribution.
The first two series, which featured guest appearances from Michelle Visage (RuPaul’s Drag Race) and Steph McGovern (Steph’s Packed Lunch), are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer, alongside ‘The Dickie Show’.
The third series was commissioned before outgoing BBC Director of Comedy Jon Petrie confirmed he would be joining Hat Trick Productions.
‘Smoggie Queens’ Series 3 will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three. No premiere date has been announced.
