David Fincher May Revive ‘Mindhunter’ as Movie Trilogy, Hints Holt McCallany

Despite being one of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed and beloved cult hits, Mindhunter never quite pulled in the numbers needed to satisfy the streamer’s almighty algorithm, leaving fans devastated when Season 3 was scrapped. But there may still be hope, as star Holt McCallany has revealed that David Fincher is considering bringing the show back… this time as a trilogy of feature-length films.

Originally created by Joe Penhall, with Fincher at the helm as frequent director and creative lead, the acclaimed psychological crime drama followed the early days of the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit and its groundbreaking work in criminal profiling. The series ran for two gripping seasons before Netflix put it on indefinite hold after Season 2 premiered back in 2019.

Despite Netflix officially confirming in 2023 that Season 3 wasn’t moving forward, whispers of a return never truly faded. While promoting his new Netflix series The Waterfront, McCallany, who played FBI agent Bill Tench, spoke to CBR about a recent meeting with Fincher.

“I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance,” McCallany revealed. “I know there are writers that are working, but, you know, David has to be happy with the scripts.”

While he made it clear nothing is set in stone, McCallany confirmed that any new instalments would remain at Netflix. “I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark.”

The actor, who stars in ‘The Waterfront’ from Kevin Williamson (Scream), also expressed deep gratitude for his time on ‘Mindhunter’ and hope for its future. “I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return… but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align.”

One of those stars is Jonathan Groff (Holden Ford), who recently won a Tony Award for his role in Merrily We Roll Along. “We gotta wait for the best actor on Broadway,” McCallany said, adding that Groff is “such a good actor, such a good singer, and such a great guy.” He also revealed he’s seen the show four times, calling it the best Broadway performance he’s witnessed in two decades.

Whether or not ‘Mindhunter’ ever returns in film form, it’s clear the cast and creators still hold the series close – and fans may want to keep their fingers crossed just a little longer.

Mindhunter’ Seasons 1 & 2 are available now on Netflix. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
