Netflix’s Top 10 Shows and Films From Early 2025: Genre Hits, Surprise Successes and Some Sad Goodbyes

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has released its official Engagement Report for January through June 2025, offering a detailed look at what global audiences were watching in the first half of the year. Covering over 95 billion hours of viewing, the data highlights the popularity of high-stakes drama, returning franchises, and an impressive lineup of genre content from around the world.

While major dramas led the overall charts, the numbers also reveal strong performances from sci-fi, anime and global titles. On the flip side, some well-watched shows won’t be coming back, reminding us that streaming success isn’t always enough to secure a renewal.

Tyler Perry’s ‘STRAW’ and Sofia Carson’s ‘The Life List’ also performed strongly, while international films made a significant impact with titles like ‘Exterritorial’ from Germany and ‘Counterattack’ from Mexico reaching wide audiences.

Family animation held its ground too, with both ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’ and ‘Despicable Me 4’ making the top 10.

Genre Highlights: Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Anime Rise to the Top

Although dramatic storytelling continues to dominate the headlines, 2025 has also been an excellent year for fans of sci-fi, fantasy and anime. ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 pulled in 31 million views, continuing its legacy as one of Netflix’s most inventive anthologies. Korean action series like ‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call’ (34 million views) and ‘Weak Hero: Class 2’ also saw strong global engagement.

On the movie side, ‘The Electric State’ delivered striking visuals and a gripping sci-fi narrative, landing it squarely in the top 10. French thriller ‘Ad Vitam’ mixed futuristic mystery with international intrigue, while animated classics such as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle continued to draw in new audiences. Anime hit ‘SAKAMOTO DAYS’ also made a solid debut with 24 million views.

This half-year shows that genre programming continues to bring in millions of viewers and remains central to Netflix’s global appeal.

Popular But Cancelled: Some Surprises Leave Fans Hanging

Not every hit survived. ‘Zero Day’, despite pulling in over 61 million views, will not be returning. The same goes for ‘American Primeval’, which reached 47 million views before being cancelled.

‘Sirens’ looks unlikely to return despite strong early numbers, and returning series like ‘Survival of the Thickest’, ‘Big Mouth’ and ‘Cobra Kai’ also concluded their runs. In some cases, these endings were planned, but in others, the decisions seem to have come despite strong engagement.

These cancellations highlight the reality that viewership alone doesn’t always determine a show’s future. Budget, global reach, and production plans all factor into renewal decisions.

Global Growth: Netflix Viewers Embrace Stories From Everywhere

More than one-third of all Netflix viewing in the first half of the year came from non-English language titles. Korean powerhouse ‘Squid Game’ remained a leader, delivering 231 million views across all three seasons. But it wasn’t alone.

Scandinavian series like ‘Secrets We Keep’ and ‘The Åre Murders’ each reached over 30 million views. Latin America also saw standout performances with ‘Counterattack’ from Mexico and ‘Medusa’ from Colombia both ranking high in their categories.

The report underscores that audiences are increasingly open to global storytelling, with international content continuing to thrive across genres and formats.

Final Thoughts

Netflix’s first half of 2025 proves that compelling storytelling continues to come from all corners of the globe. Traditional dramas and limited series remain powerhouses, but sci-fi, anime and action fare are drawing millions of viewers as well.

While it’s disappointing to see some favourites end too soon, there’s plenty of fresh content rising up to take their place. The future is bright for genre TV and global hits alike.
