Just when you think ‘9-1-1‘ has run out of ways to cause absolute chaos in Los Angeles, the trailer for Season 9 proves the show is still light-years ahead of everyone else. Literally. This year, Athena and Hen are heading into space.
The trailer reveals that Angela Bassett (Black Panther) and Aisha Hinds (Under The Dome) will be suiting up for orbit after rescuing a billionaire who somehow manages to get swallowed by a whale. Yes, you read that right. The unlucky mogul, played by Mark Consuelos (Riverdale), decides to thank them for saving his life by sending them on a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip aboard his private rocket. Naturally, things go wrong almost immediately when he chooses to launch them in the middle of a geomagnetic storm. Gratitude, 9-1-1 style.
It sounds like the sort of story that would break most shows, but this is 9-1-1. The same series that once turned twenty-two million bees into a three-episode disaster arc called “Bee-nado” and somehow made it work. Many fans thought that was the moment the show would finally jump the shark, but it turned out to be one of its most entertaining stunts. So, if any procedural can make a whale rescue lead to space travel without completely losing its mind, it is this one.
From Firehouse To Flight Deck
Season 9 picks up in the aftermath of Captain Bobby Nash’s death, leaving the 118 team reeling. Peter Krause’s absence casts a long shadow as the crew search for a new leader. Hen was the logical choice but turned down the promotion, leaving speculation that Chimney might finally take command.
Athena, meanwhile, is moving forward in more ways than one. After putting the home she shared with Bobby up for sale in the Season 8 finale, she seems ready for a new chapter. By the end of the third episode of the new season, viewers will know far more about where she is heading, emotionally and literally, assuming she makes it safely back from orbit.
The trailer also features glimpses of Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer) as Maddie, Ryan Guzman (Step Up Revolution) as Eddie, Kenneth Choi (The People v. O. J. Simpson) as Chimney, and Gavin McHugh as Christopher. Corinne Massiah (Mistresses) and Elijah M. Cooper return as Athena’s children, May and Harry, and have both been promoted to series regulars.
And if you were curious about Chimney’s brief flirtation with blonde hair during the off-season, the trailer confirms he is firmly back to his original look.
The Expanding (And Contracting) Universe
Season 9 arrives alongside the debut of 9-1-1: Nashville, which steps in following the cancellation of 9-1-1: Lone Star. The Texas-set spin-off became too expensive to transfer from Fox to ABC in the United States, so Nashville was created to fill the gap with a new cast and a distinctly Southern flavour.
The series stars Chris O’Donnell (NCIS: Los Angeles) as Captain Don Hart, a rugged rodeo rider and devoted family man with more secrets than his Stetson can hide. Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy) plays Blythe, his wife, who works in horse racing and keeps the family glued together. Country music star LeAnn Rimes makes her series-regular TV debut as Dixie Bennings, Don’s former flame and mother to Blue, who encourages him to reconnect with his estranged father.
The cast also includes Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Nashville) as dispatcher Cammie Raleigh, Michael Provost (Insatiable) as Don and Blythe’s son Ryan, Hailey Kilgore (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) as firefighter and singer Taylor, Juani Feliz (Fleishman Is in Trouble) as adrenaline-chasing ex-trauma surgeon Roxie, and Hunter McVey as Blue, the haunted bad boy whose career as a stripper somehow leads to firefighting and a family reunion that is guaranteed to be messy.
Behind the scenes, the main series has also moved from the Fox lot to Burbank. That prompted some panic among fans when Ryan Guzman posted a farewell video from the old stage, but he was simply saying goodbye to the building rather than leaving the show.
So, to recap: last year gave us twenty-two million bees. This year brings whales, rockets, and country ballads. It is over the top, completely ridiculous, and somehow exactly what 9-1-1 fans signed up for.
